October is the month the autumn schedule stops being crowded and starts being expensive. September packed twelve launches into four weeks; October answers with sixteen, and unlike September the two biggest are not fighting over the same wallet — Gears of War: E-Day is an Xbox and PC release on 6 October, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 lands almost everywhere on 23 October, and between them sit a new Castlevania, the 1.0 launch of Enshrouded, a Star Wars racer, a new Ace Combat, Planet Zoo 2, Phantom Blade Zero and Minecraft finally getting its Switch 2 edition. Here is the full calendar with publisher-confirmed dates and platforms, plus the one policy change that decides whether October costs you one purchase or three.
The headliners
Three releases will decide how the month is remembered. Gears of War: E-Day is the first Gears in five years and the first to abandon the multiplatform strategy Microsoft had been building — it is Xbox Series X|S and PC only, with no PS5 version. Modern Warfare 4 is the annual Call of Duty, and the first in years that a Game Pass subscriber has to actually buy. Phantom Blade Zero closes the month on 29 October after slipping out of September, a Wuxia action game that has been shown at PlayStation showcases since 2023 and is finally dated.
The Game Pass change that defines October
For four years the shape of a Call of Duty launch has been the same: subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate, play it on day one, pay nothing extra. That ends with Modern Warfare 4. Microsoft restructured the service in April 2026 and pulled Call of Duty out of the day-one line-up for both Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass; the game is expected to reach the service roughly a year after release, in 2027. Xbox has been telling subscribers directly that they need to buy it if they want to play on 23 October.
The reverse is true for the other Xbox headliner. Gears of War: E-Day is day one on Game Pass on 6 October, exactly as first-party releases have been. So October is the month where the subscription covers the exclusive and not the annual blockbuster — the opposite of what most people assume when they budget for autumn.
Week 1 — 1 to 4 October
The month opens with a genuine traffic jam. Five games land on Thursday 1 October, four of them on Switch 2, and a new Ace Combat follows the next day. None of them will top the month’s sales charts, but between the Rayman revival, two Octopath ports and a Dynasty Warriors remaster it is the busiest single day of the calendar.

Week 2 — 5 to 11 October
The first big week. Tuesday the 6th is the month’s Xbox moment, and Friday the 9th gives Dragon’s Dogma 2 both a substantial expansion and its Switch 2 debut on the same day.

Dated for October, day not confirmed
One notable release has an October window but no day attached. Moon Studios has committed No Rest for the Wicked’s 1.0 launch to October 2026 on PC and PS5, ending a two-year early access run with a large expansion — a new horde mode, extra weapons, new bosses and locations, and a reworked class system. Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 versions are coming later rather than at 1.0. What Switch 2 owners get
October is a strong month for Nintendo’s new hardware and, unusually, most of it is not first-party. Eight of the month’s releases reach Switch 2, and only one of them is exclusive to it.
- Rayman Legends Retold (1 Oct) — day one alongside PS5, Xbox and PC, no port gap.
- Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II (1 Oct) — new Switch 2 versions, digital and as game-key cards.
