September 2026 is the month the autumn schedule broke. Rockstar put Grand Theft Auto VI on 19 November, and almost every other publisher with a big-budget game responded the same way — by moving out of its blast radius and landing in September instead. The result is one of the densest four-week windows in years: Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine, Remedy’s CONTROL Resonant, Konami’s Silent Hill: Townfall, Capcom’s first new Onimusha in two decades, both annual sports giants, a Switch 2-exclusive Fire Emblem and the return of Dawn of War. Here is the full calendar with publisher-confirmed dates and platforms, every early-access window that lets you start days ahead, and — because a declined payment at midnight is a miserable way to start a launch — which wallet to load before each one unlocks.

The headliners

These are the launches with the biggest franchises and the longest waits behind them. Every date below was confirmed by the publisher at the time of writing — Capcom moved Onimusha three weeks earlier than originally announced, so treat this as a snapshot rather than gospel and check back before you pre-order.

Why September got this crowded

Release calendars are a game of chicken, and in 2026 everyone blinked at once. Grand Theft Auto VI is locked to 19 November after two delays, and no publisher wants a US$70 single-player game competing for attention — or for discretionary spending — with the biggest entertainment launch of the decade. October is Call of Duty and Gears of War territory. August is traditionally dead. That leaves September, and this year it is carrying the weight of a full autumn season on its own.

Week 1 — 1 to 6 September

The month opens hard. Rebel Wolves — a studio built largely from the team behind The Witcher 3 — ships its debut on the 3rd, and then the first Friday of September doubles up with the annual basketball sim and Capcom’s long-awaited samurai revival.

Week 2 — 7 to 13 September

The only genuinely quiet stretch of the month, and deliberately so — nobody wants to launch into the gap between the 2K/Onimusha weekend and Wolverine. Use it: this is the week to clear a backlog title, check that your account region matches the card you plan to buy, and get a wallet topped up before the second half of the month arrives all at once. Smaller indie releases and shadow-drops will fill the space, but nothing with a confirmed blockbuster date sits here.

Week 3 — 14 to 20 September

The heaviest week of the month, and the one PS5 and Switch 2 owners have been waiting for. Insomniac’s Wolverine lands on the 15th, then the 17th delivers a Switch 2-exclusive Fire Emblem and the return of a beloved RTS series on the same day.

Marvel’s Wolverine is a PS5 exclusive with no announced PC or Xbox version, which makes the buying decision unusually simple: it is a PlayStation Store purchase or nothing. If you would rather not put a card through PSN’s checkout on launch night, a PlayStation gift card redeemed a day early leaves the balance sitting ready — our guide to checking your PSN wallet balance covers where to find it on PS5, PS4 and the mobile app.

Week 4 — 21 to 27 September

The pileup. Dune: Awakening finally reaches consoles on the 22nd, then the 24th puts two of the year’s most-anticipated horror-adjacent titles head to head, and EA’s football juggernaut closes the week.

A single but significant closer: Mojang’s dungeon-crawler sequel arrives on the 29th across all four current platforms, day one on Game Pass, with a new art style, a jump ability, four-piece armour and talismans that grant passive effects. It is the most family-friendly launch of the month and the one most likely to be bought with a gift card rather than a saved credit card.

What Switch 2 owners get

September is the strongest month yet for Nintendo’s new hardware, and the first where a Switch 2 owner genuinely does not have to wait for the multiplatform releases.

  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword (4 Sep) — day one alongside PS5, Xbox and PC, no port gap.
  • NBA 2K27 (4 Sep) — the current-gen build, not a cut-down last-gen version.
  • Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave (17 Sep) — a genuine Switch 2 exclusive, plus a physical Dagdan Collection with a steel case, art cards, a map and an artbook.
  • LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight (18 Sep) — the Switch 2 version of May’s release, arriving with the Mayhem Collection DLC.
  • EA Sports FC 27 (25 Sep) — on both Switch 2 and the original Switch.
  • Minecraft Dungeons II (29 Sep) — simultaneous with every other platform.
All six are eShop purchases if you buy digitally, and eShop credit is region-locked to the country on your Nintendo Account — a US card will not load onto a European account. Our walkthrough on redeeming a Nintendo eShop card covers the exact redemption path on Switch 2, the browser route, and what to do when a code is rejected.

What arrives free on Game Pass

Two of the month’s releases cost nothing extra if you already subscribe — which changes the maths on whether to buy them at all.

Dune: Awakening22 SepDay one on Game Pass at the console launch
Minecraft Dungeons II29 SepDay one on Xbox and with Game Pass
If those two are the reason you are considering a subscription, a month of Game Pass Ultimate costs a fraction of two full-price purchases — and an Xbox gift card pays for a subscription just as happily as it pays for a game. Our PS Plus vs Xbox Game Pass comparison breaks down which tier is actually worth it in 2026, and what each one includes beyond the day-one releases.

Early access: who plays first

Four of this month’s launches are effectively two launches — an early window tied to an edition or a membership, then the standard release. If you want to play first, you have to own the right thing before the early date, not after it.

Which gift card do you need?

Wallet codes are platform-bound. A Steam code only ever spends on Steam; a PlayStation code only on PSN. For the multiplatform games below that means the decision is not "which card is best" but "where will I install this" — answer that first, then buy the matching card.

One caveat worth reading before you buy: the card’s region has to match the account’s region, not the country you live in. That single rule causes most of the "invalid code" support tickets we see in a launch week — our explainer on gift card regions and country locks covers how to check your account region on each platform before you spend anything.

The launch-day checklist

  • Confirm which platform you are actually installing on — the multiplatform games have four different stores.
  • Check your account region, then buy a gift card in that same region.
  • Redeem the code into your wallet at least a day early, not at midnight.
  • Decide between standard and upgraded edition before the early-access window opens.
  • Check whether it is on Game Pass first — Dune: Awakening and Minecraft Dungeons II both are.
  • Pre-order and pre-load if the game is large; the balance is deducted the same way as a card.
  • Make sure two-factor is set up and your authenticator is on a phone you have with you.
That last one matters more than it sounds. A launch-night purchase on a locked-out account is unrecoverable in the moment — our guide to securing your gaming account with 2FA and passkeys covers where the setting lives on each platform and why the backup codes are the step everyone skips.

FAQs

What is the biggest game coming out in September 2026?
Marvel’s Wolverine on 15 September is the marquee launch — Insomniac’s follow-up to the Marvel’s Spider-Man games, built specifically for PS5 with no PS4 version. It is a single-player, narrative-driven action game rather than an open world, and it is a PlayStation exclusive with no announced PC or Xbox release.
Is Marvel’s Wolverine coming to PC or Xbox?
Not at launch, and nothing has been announced. Previous Insomniac PlayStation titles have reached PC eventually, but there is no confirmed date or commitment for Wolverine. On 15 September it is a PS5 purchase only.
Why are so many big games launching in the same week?
Because Grand Theft Auto VI is locked to 19 November and October is already crowded with Call of Duty and Gears of War. September is the last clear window before that, so publishers with autumn releases converged on it. Capcom actually moved Onimusha: Way of the Sword three weeks earlier — from 25 September to the 4th — to get out of the crush.
Can I play EA Sports FC 27 before 25 September?
Yes, from 18 September, if you own the Ultimate Edition or subscribe to EA Play. The early window is seven days ahead of the worldwide launch. FC 27 Lite, a free preview with a limited selection of modes, arrives on 25 September alongside the full release.
Which September games are day one on Game Pass?
Dune: Awakening on 22 September, arriving on Game Pass at the same time as its PS5 and Xbox Series X|S console launch, and Minecraft Dungeons II on 29 September. Both are free to play with an active subscription rather than a separate purchase.
Can I use a gift card to pre-order and pre-load a September release?
Yes. Redeem the code into your wallet first, then place the pre-order — the store deducts from your balance exactly as it would from a card, and pre-load unlocks on the usual schedule. If cross-border card payments tend to get declined for you, this is the most reliable way to secure a launch title.
Do these dates ever move?
Regularly, and in both directions — Onimusha moved earlier, GTA 6 moved twice in the other direction. Anything more than a few weeks out is a plan rather than a promise. Wishlisting a game on its store is the simplest way to be told first when a date changes.
Looking at the rest of the year? Our rundown of the biggest games coming in late 2026 runs through October and the GTA 6 window in November, and the August 2026 release calendar covers what is landing right now. If you would rather buy something already released for less, the 2026 Steam sale calendar lists the confirmed sale windows, and our complete Steam gift card guide explains denominations, regions and wallet codes before you buy one.
