Games Coming Out in August 2026: Full Release Date Calendar (PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch 2)

August is usually the industry’s quiet month — the gap between the summer showcases and the autumn avalanche. Not in 2026. This August opens with Game Freak’s first non-Pokémon blockbuster, hands PS5 and PC owners a 4v4 Marvel tag fighter, drops the annual Madden, and then closes with one of the densest single release days of the year: 27 August, when Star Wars, A Plague Tale and Metal Gear all arrive within hours of each other. A day later, Elden Ring finally goes portable on Switch 2. Here is the full calendar, week by week, with confirmed platforms — and, because launch day is the worst possible moment to discover your payment method has been declined, which wallet to load before each one unlocks.

The headliners

These are the launches with the biggest budgets, the biggest franchises or the longest waits behind them. Everything below is a publisher-confirmed date at the time of writing; smaller titles and shadow-drops move around far more than these do.

Week 1 — 3 to 9 August

The month starts strong. Beast of Reincarnation is Game Freak’s first big-budget release away from Pokémon and its first appearance on non-Nintendo consoles in years — a post-apocalyptic action RPG set in a ruined Japan, launching straight into Game Pass. Two days later, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls arrives from Arc System Works (Guilty Gear, DNF Duel), a 4v4 tag fighter with 20 characters at launch and the studio’s trademark anime-styled 3D art.

Week 2 — 10 to 16 August

Thursday 13 August is the month’s first pile-up: the annual Madden, a Vietnam-era standalone expansion of the milsim shooter Hell Let Loose, and Duskfade, a hand-crafted 3D action platformer that has been building word of mouth through its demo. Very different audiences, one shared release date.

Week 3 — 17 to 23 August

A quieter but distinctly interesting week, weighted towards horror and dark fantasy. Frogwares returns to Lovecraftian Oakmont with The Sinking City 2, Cold Symmetry’s Mortal Shell II expands the cult soulslike into an open world, and STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT rebuilds the classic visual novel — though not on every platform at once.

Week 4 — 24 to 31 August

This is where August earns its reputation. Thursday 27 August alone brings a Clone Wars tactics game from the team behind Firaxis-style turn-based combat, Asobo’s prequel to A Plague Tale, and Konami’s long-requested second Metal Gear collection — the one that finally brings Metal Gear Solid 4 off the PS3. Then, on the Friday, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring lands on Switch 2 as the Tarnished Edition.

That last detail matters if you already own Elden Ring elsewhere. You are not required to re-buy the whole game on Switch 2 to see the new material: the fresh content from Tarnished Edition is also being sold as a DLC pack on existing platforms, launching on the same 28 August date. Buy the Switch 2 version for portability, or the DLC pack to top up the copy you already have.

Also landing in August

Beyond the headliners, release trackers list several hundred titles across all storefronts this month — the vast majority of them small PC and indie releases. These are the mid-size ones most likely to show up on a wishlist, with dates as currently listed. Platform line-ups for smaller titles change more often than for big publishers, so check the store page before buying.

What arrives free on Game Pass

Two of this month’s notable releases are day-one subscription titles rather than purchases: Beast of Reincarnation on 4 August and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy on 27 August both land on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at launch. If you were planning to buy either outright, a subscription is the cheaper route — and it is one of the few cases where the maths is not close.

Which gift card do you need?

The rule is simple: the card has to match the store you buy from, not the game itself. A multi-platform release like Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 can be bought with a Steam, PlayStation or Xbox card — but only the one matching the platform you will actually install it on.

Editions, early access and pre-load

Almost every major August release ships in at least two editions, and the more expensive tier usually buys time rather than content — two or three days of early access, plus cosmetics. Deciding before launch week is what stops you paying for a tier you did not want at 2am with the download queue already crawling.

1. Decide the platform first
   Editions and prices differ per store, and a code bought for one platform can never be moved to another. Pick where you will install it, then buy for that store.
2. Read what the Deluxe tier actually includes
   Early access, a season pass, or just cosmetics? Madden’s tiers buy up to seven days of early play; other Deluxe editions this month are mostly cosmetic bundles.
3. Top up the wallet a day or two early
   Codes usually deliver in minutes, but redeeming ahead of time means you are not troubleshooting a payment while the servers are being hammered. Load enough for the edition you chose, including tax where your store adds it.
4. Pre-order or pre-purchase to enable pre-load
   Pre-loading pulls the install down in advance so the game is playable the moment it unlocks — essential for the 27 August pile-up if three of them are on your list.
5. Set an unlock reminder in your own timezone
   Several launches this month unlock at 08:00 PT rather than local midnight. Convert once, set the alarm, and you will not sit refreshing a store page for six hours.

Dates slip — how to stay current

Two of this month’s releases were already moved once: Hell Let Loose: Vietnam slid from June, and Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition was delayed out of 2025 entirely while FromSoftware worked on Switch 2 performance. Nothing on this calendar is guaranteed until a game goes gold, so a small amount of hygiene saves disappointment.

• Wishlist the game on your store of choice — Steam, PlayStation and Xbox all push a notification if the date changes or a discount lands.
• Trust the publisher’s own channels over aggregator calendars; a store page date is updated faster than a listicle.
• Watch for “goes gold” announcements — once a game is gold, the date is effectively locked.
• For staggered launches like STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT, confirm your specific platform, not just the game.
• Keep wallet funds unspent rather than pre-ordering months out, so a delay does not lock up your money.
