Minecraft Dungeons 2 release date and unlock time
Mojang never moved the date it set in June: Minecraft Dungeons 2 launched on Tuesday 29 September 2026 as a single worldwide unlock at 08:00 UTC — 1:00 AM Pacific, 4:00 AM Eastern, 9:00 AM in the UK, 12:00 PM in the UAE and 5:00 PM in Japan. Before launch, the PlayStation Store was the only storefront that printed an exact time. When we opened it from our office in Poland on 26 September it read “9/29/2026 10:00 AM GMT+2”, and when we reopened the Steam page on 1 October it showed a release date of Sep 29, 2026 with the Buy buttons live.

Download size and preload
The nintendo.com listings give an estimated file size of 6.8 GB on both Switch and Switch 2, and Nintendo was the only platform that advertised a pre-load. Steam still lists no storage figure on its requirements panel. Either way it is a small download by 2026 standards, so if you buy it today you will be playing within minutes on most connections.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 reviews: critics vs players
The Minecraft Dungeons 2 reviews split cleanly into two camps. Critics, who played before launch, mostly rate it as a clear step up from the 2020 original: on OpenCritic it scores 85 with 83% of critics recommending it, and Metacritic shows a 76 Metascore from 30 reviews, 18 positive and 12 mixed, none negative. Game Informer was cooler, calling it a straightforward, entry-level action-RPG. The praise centres on the open world and the new Sift dimension; the complaints are that it stays simple and is best with friends.
Steam players are harsher. When we read the store page on 1 October, 60% of 2,565 English reviews were positive, which Steam labels “Mixed”. Reading through the negative reviews, the theme is not the game design but whether it starts at all: account linking, error codes and crashes on PC.

Error 0064 and 0029 on PC
The most common launch-day problem on Steam is that the game asks you to link a Microsoft account and then fails with error 0064 (sign-in) or 0029 (account link). Mojang had not published an official fix when we checked on 1 October. The workaround collected in the most-replied Steam discussion thread — written by a player, not the developer — is:
- Update the XBOX app and XBOX Game Bar from the Microsoft Store.
- Sign in to the XBOX app with the Microsoft account you want to use.
- Link your Steam account in the XBOX app settings, then restart the game.
- Launch the game normally, not as administrator, with the XBOX app left open.
- If it still fails: sync the Windows clock and time zone, or add -windowed to the Steam launch options.
This is the same Microsoft account that carries capes and the Hero Cape reward into Minecraft, so use the one you already play Minecraft on rather than creating a fresh one to get past the error.
Does it work on Steam Deck?
Minecraft Dungeons 2 price and editions
| Edition | Steam (US) | XBOX (US) | PS Store (US) | Nintendo (US) | Steam (Poland) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $29.99 | $29.99 | $29.99 | $29.99 | 129,00 zł |
| Deluxe | $49.99 | $49.99 | $49.99 | — | 219,00 zł |
| Deluxe Upgrade (add-on) | $19.99 | — | — | — | — |

Is the Deluxe Edition worth $20 more?
Now that the game is out, the decision is easier, because the Deluxe Upgrade sells on its own. On Steam, Standard plus the upgrade costs $49.98 — one cent less than buying Deluxe outright. That means there is no penalty for starting with Standard and upgrading once DLC 1 is announced and priced, and no reason to pay up front for two expansions nobody has seen. The capes-and-promos post on minecraft.net lists the Deluxe hero skins as dark-gold versions of Valorie, Kellen, Ren and Flores.
What happened to the pre-order bonus
The pre-order bonus — two hero skins, the Twisted cape and the Twisted chicken pet — closed on Monday 28 September at 12pm PDT, the day before launch, per the small print in Mojang’s date announcement. Copies bought from launch day onward do not include it, and we found no store re-offering it. The Hero Cape is still available: play both the first Minecraft Dungeons and Dungeons II on the same Microsoft account before 31 December 2026.
Is Minecraft Dungeons 2 on Game Pass?
Yes, but not on every tier. The xbox.com game page lists exactly two plans: Ultimate and PC. When we read the Game Pass plans page on 26 September, Ultimate cost $22.99 a month and PC Game Pass $13.99. Essential ($9.99) and Premium ($14.99) are not named on the game page, so they do not include it. Ultimate adds cloud streaming, which is also the easiest way to play on a Steam Deck until the native fix lands. The game supports XBOX Play Anywhere: buy it once and it is yours on both XBOX consoles and Windows PC.
| Tier | Price / month | Minecraft Dungeons II included? |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate | $22.99 | Yes — console, PC and cloud |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 | Yes — PC only |
| Premium | $14.99 | Not listed |
| Essential | $9.99 | Not listed |
Here is the maths. One month of PC Game Pass costs less than half the Standard Edition. With mixed early player reviews, a month of Game Pass is also a cheap way to find out whether the login issues affect your PC before you buy. If you plan to play for months or want the DLC, buying outright wins.

Co-op and cross-play
“There’s both local play through couch co-op and teaming up online through cross-play. You can also combine the two with mixed co-op.”
— Mojang Studios, New gameplay systems in Minecraft Dungeons II, minecraft.net, 31 August 2026
Parties go up to four players, as in the first game, and the sequel adds proper matchmaking plus party codes for joining a friend directly. When we checked, every storefront agreed on the multiplayer basics: the PlayStation Store lists 1–4 players and “PS Plus required for online play”, and nintendo.com lists 1–4 on a single system and 1–4 online with Nintendo Switch Online. The Steam page adds that the game needs a Microsoft account, which it can link to your Steam account — the same link that is behind the 0064 and 0029 errors above.
What is new compared with the first game
- An interconnected world with settlements, fast-travel hubs and caves whose layouts change between visits, instead of separate levels picked from a map table
- A second dimension, the Sift, alongside the Overworld
- Main quests and side quests
- Combat slots doubled from 6 to 12
- Four-piece armour (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots) and a new talisman slot for passive bonuses
- Unlimited, self-recharging ammunition for ranged weapons
- A jump, usable for exploring and for attacks from above
- A personal enchantment library, so you choose which enchantments go on which gear and can level them up
Minecraft Dungeons 2 PC requirements
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 64-bit (1703 or newer) | Windows 10 64-bit (1703 or newer) |
| CPU | Intel Core i3-8100 / AMD Ryzen 3 2200G | Intel Core i5-8400 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600 |
| RAM | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | GeForce GTX 1050 / Radeon RX 560, 2 GB VRAM | GeForce GTX 1060 / Radeon RX 580, 6 GB VRAM |
| DirectX | Version 11 | Version 11 |

These are modest requirements. The minimum is a 2017-era quad-core with a GTX 1050, the kind of hardware most budget gaming PCs have long since passed. Windows 10 or 11 is required — SteamOS and Linux are not supported at launch.
Before you buy: checklist
- Choose Standard ($29.99), Deluxe ($49.99) or Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass. Essential and Premium don’t include it
- On Steam, buy Standard now and add the $19.99 Deluxe Upgrade later — it costs the same overall
- On PC, sign in to the XBOX app with your Microsoft account before first launch to avoid error 0064 / 0029
- Steam Deck owners: wait for Mojang’s fix, or stream it through Game Pass Ultimate
- Redeem any Xbox, Nintendo or Steam gift card on an account in the same country as the card
- Use the Microsoft account from the first Minecraft Dungeons to qualify for the Hero Cape before 31 December 2026

Method: we took the screenshots in this post on 26 September (before launch) and 1 October 2026 (after launch). We have not played the game ourselves, so the verdict on quality comes from the critic and player aggregates above, and the login fix is a player workaround we are reporting, not one we tested. We confirmed we don’t stock the game by searching our own catalogue, and we checked that the gift cards linked above were in stock. Our standards are set out in our editorial policy.
