Gears of War E-Day release time in your time zone
This is the part most release articles still get wrong, because the exact time only appeared on 17 September. E-Day does not unlock at local midnight. XBOX Wire gives a single global moment — 8am Pacific, 15:00 UTC — and everyone on every platform gets in at the same second. For Europe that means a late-afternoon launch, and for Japan, Australia and New Zealand it means the game actually arrives on 7 October local time.

Pre-install opens 29 September, 15:00 UTC
Pre-install — what most people call preload — starts on Tuesday 29 September at 15:00 UTC on XBOX Series X|S, XBOX on PC and Steam. XBOX Wire is explicit that it is open to Game Pass members as well as pre-orders, which is unusual: on plenty of day-one Game Pass titles, subscribers cannot start the download until the game goes live. Here you can have all 115 GB sitting on the drive a week before you can press play.
Early Access opens 1 October, 15:00 UTC
Premium Edition owners play from Thursday 1 October at 15:00 UTC, five days ahead of everyone else. The Collector’s Edition, which bundles the Premium digital upgrade, lands the same day. Two things are worth being clear about: a Game Pass subscription on its own does not include that early window — Ultimate and PC Game Pass members start on 6 October — and the pre-order bonus skins unlock on 1 October regardless of which edition you bought, so Standard Edition pre-orders will see their Exfil Dom skin waiting when they get in on the 6th.
Gears of War E-Day editions and prices
| Edition | US | UK | Eurozone | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (digital or disc) | $69.99 | £59.99 | €69.99 | The base game on 6 October |
| Premium (digital only) | $99.99 | £89.99 | €99.99 | Base game + 5 days early + cosmetics + 1,000 Iron |
| Premium Upgrade (digital only) | $30.00 | £30.00 | €30.00 | Adds everything above to Standard or Game Pass |
| Collector’s Edition (XBOX Series X, Steam) | — | — | — | Physical collectibles + the Premium digital upgrade, from 1 October |
What the Premium Edition actually adds
- Up to five days of early access, from 1 October 2026
- The Emergence Customization Pack: a Death’s Rendezvous Marcus Fenix Legendary skin, a Bloodied Hunter Tai Kaliso Epic skin, two Legendary poses, two weapon skin sets, and a banner, emblem and icon
- Four additional Seasonal Customization Packs, each with two character skins, two weapon skin sets, two poses and a banner, emblem and icon
- 1,000 Iron, the premium in-game currency
- The Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack — campaign only, not Versus or Horde Siege
“Reading the official editions page end to end, we hit a number that does not match itself. The Premium section says “4 Additional Seasonal Customization Packs”; the Collector’s Edition section, further down the same page, says “Five Seasonal Customization Packs, starting with the Emergence Pack”. They reconcile — the Emergence Pack plus four more is five — but if you have seen both figures quoted, that is why.”
— What we saw on gearsofwar.com, 18 September 2026
Note what is not in that list: story content. There is no extra campaign, no expansion pass and no separate mission. Every edition ships the same game. Premium is a cosmetics-and-calendar purchase, which makes the decision unusually clean.
Is the Premium Edition worth it?
PC Game Pass ($13.99/mo) or Game Pass Ultimate ($22.99/mo)
One month of PC Game Pass costs less than a fifth of the Standard Edition and gets you the full game on 6 October. If you finish the campaign inside the month, you have paid $13.99 for it.
- Cheapest way in by a distance
- Pre-install still opens on 29 September
- Cancel after the campaign
- No early access without the $30 upgrade
- You stop owning it when you cancel
- Ultimate is the only console tier with day one
Standard Edition ($69.99 / £59.99 / €69.99)
The straightforward buy. You own it, you play on 6 October, and the pre-order bonus skins are included. On XBOX it is Play Anywhere, so one purchase covers console and PC.
- Yours permanently
- Pre-order bonus included
- Play Anywhere across XBOX console and PC
- Five times the cost of a month of PC Game Pass
- No early access
- Steam copies do not carry over to XBOX
Premium Edition ($99.99 / £89.99 / €99.99)
You are paying roughly $30 for five days and a pile of cosmetics. If you already have Game Pass, do not buy this — buy the $30 Premium Upgrade instead and get the identical early start for a third of the price.
- Five days early
- 1,000 Iron and five cosmetic packs
- Campaign-only Bravo Squad weapon pack
- No extra story content at all
- The $30 upgrade gets Game Pass members the same thing
- Cosmetics are mostly multiplayer-facing
Is Gears of War E-Day on Game Pass?
Yes — on day one, but only on two of the four plans. This trips people up because Microsoft renamed and re-tiered Game Pass, and “new games on day one” is no longer something every paid tier gets. We opened the plan comparison on xbox.com on 18 September 2026 and read the feature lines off it directly.
| Plan | US price / month | Day-one games? | Gets E-Day on 6 October? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $9.99 | No — 50+ games, no day-one line | No |
| Premium | $14.99 | “New XBOX-published games within 1yr of launch” | No — up to a year later |
| Ultimate | $22.99 | “New games on day one” | Yes |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 | “New games on day one” (PC only) | Yes, on PC |

XBOX Play Anywhere: one purchase, console and PC
E-Day is an XBOX Play Anywhere title. Buy it once on the XBOX Series X|S store or the XBOX on PC store and you get it on both, on the same account, with saves and achievements carried across. That materially changes the maths if you play in two places: one $69.99 purchase, or one Game Pass Ultimate subscription, covers the console and the PC. The exception is Steam — a Steam copy is a Steam copy, and it does not unlock the XBOX version.

Two lines in that table are hard requirements rather than suggestions. A hardware ray-tracing capable GPU is required — the footnote on the official specifications sheet states that graphics cards without dedicated ray-tracing support are not supported at all, which rules out the GTX 10 series and the RX 500 series entirely. And storage must be an SSD; 115 GB on a mechanical drive will not do. On the upside, E-Day ships with DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4 and Intel XeSS 3.0t, a built-in benchmark mode, and HDR and ultrawide support.

# is asking for a failed pre-install on 29 September.Launch-week checklist
- Decide your route before 29 September: Standard, Premium, or Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass
- If you want the 1 October start on Game Pass, buy the $30 Premium Upgrade rather than the full Premium Edition
- Clear 115 GB on an SSD and confirm your GPU supports hardware ray tracing
- Redeem any Xbox or Steam gift card on an account in the matching country before you check out
- Start the pre-install at 15:00 UTC on 29 September, not on launch morning
- Check your Game Pass tier — Essential and Premium do not include E-Day on 6 October
- Set an alarm for 15:00 UTC on 6 October, or 1 October if you have Premium

Method: all six pages were opened and read on 18 September 2026. Gift card denominations and region locks were checked in the Virtwave store the same day, and we confirmed we do not stock Gears of War: E-Day itself by searching our own catalogue for both “Gears of War” and “E-Day”. Times in the time-zone table were calculated from 15:00 UTC using the daylight-saving rules in force on 6 October 2026. We will update this post on launch day. Our standards are set out in our editorial policy.
Also out this month: Graveyard Keeper 2 — release date, price and pre-order bonus, which lands on 22 September in a single edition.
