Nintendo Switch Sports Resort release date

Nintendo announced the game in its 9 June 2026 Nintendo Direct with a worldwide release date of 22 October 2026, and the date has not moved since. On 5 October we checked the US, UK and European Nintendo store pages and all three still show 22 October. None of them publishes an unlock hour. The US page data stores only a calendar date (2026-10-22T00:00:00Z, the same placeholder Nintendo uses for every game), so we are not going to print a time Nintendo has not announced. Like other Nintendo digital releases, it should unlock around midnight local time for your eShop region, but treat that as an expectation, not a confirmed time.

How to pre-order and pre-load it

  1. Open the listing on your Switch 2 or on nintendo.com
Search the Nintendo eShop for “Nintendo Switch Sports Resort” and make sure the version reads Nintendo Switch 2. There is no Switch 1 listing to pick by mistake.
  2. Add funds first if you pay by gift card
Redeem an eShop card for your account’s region before checkout. The US price is $49.99, so a $50 card covers it.
  3. Pre-order the Digital edition
In Europe and the UK, Nintendo takes the payment automatically from 7 days before release. If you pre-order inside that window, you pay straight away.
  4. Leave the console online with automatic downloads on
The pre-load downloads ahead of launch, so the game is ready to play the moment it unlocks. You need about 16 GB free in System Memory or on a microSD Express card.
Below the pre-order button, the US store page says the pre-order “lets you pre-load the game, so you’ll be able to play as soon as the game is released.” What it does not give is a pre-load start date. The 7-day payment rule comes from the pre-order terms on Nintendo UK’s page for the game.

How much is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort digital price by eShop region, read from Nintendo’s own eShop price data on 5 October 2026, plus the gift cards we stock that cover it.
eShop regionDigital priceGift cards that cover it
United States$49.99 (physical $59.99)1 × US $50
CanadaCA$69.99CA$50 + CA$20
United Kingdom£41.992 × £25 (£15 + £25 falls £1.99 short)
Eurozone (e.g. Germany)€49.992 × €25
AustraliaA$84.95We do not stock Australian eShop cards
The UK is the awkward one. £41.99 sits just above £40, so the obvious pair of a Nintendo eShop 25 GBP card and a 15 GBP card leaves you £1.99 short. Two £25 cards cover it with £8.01 left for DLC or a cheap indie. Our UK eShop card amount guide runs the same maths for other games. In the eurozone, two Nintendo eShop 25 EUR cards make €50, and in Canada a CA$50 eShop card plus a CA$20 card make exactly CA$70. When we checked our store on 5 October, every card in the table was in stock. eShop cards are region-locked, so buy the one that matches your Nintendo Account’s country. Here is how to redeem a Nintendo eShop card.

The Switch 2 + Sports Resort bundle

If you do not own a Switch 2 yet, Nintendo sells a Nintendo Switch 2 + Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle for $529.99 in the US. It includes the console, a full download of the game and a 3-month Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership, and Nintendo’s store page puts the saving at $27.98 against buying the three separately. The game in the bundle is a download code, not a cartridge, and the bundle page was already taking pre-purchases when we read it on 5 October.

All 12 sports in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort

The 12 sports and their side modes as Nintendo describes them on its UK game page, read 5 October 2026. Jump Rope is a warm-up, not one of the 12.

The last three are what Nintendo calls Leisure Sports. They double as the way you explore Wuhu Island, hunting Spocco Photos on Sightseeing Tours. For solo players there is Island Crown, a single-player ladder against Island Champions and Legends across nine of the sports. Spocco Points earned in matches, offline or online, unlock more outfits and accessories for your Sportsmate or Mii.

What did not come back from Switch Sports

Compare the list with the 2022 Nintendo Switch Sports and three of its events are gone: Soccer, Badminton and Chambara (sword fighting) are not among the 12. Bowling, Tennis, Volleyball and Golf carry over, and most of the rest returns from the Wii games, above all Wii Sports Resort, whose Wuhu Island setting this game revives. If Chambara was your favourite, the old game is still the only place to play it, and nothing on Nintendo’s pages mentions an upgrade, discount or save transfer from Switch Sports to Resort.

Switch Sports Resort FAQs

When does Nintendo Switch Sports Resort come out?
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort comes out on Thursday 22 October 2026, worldwide, on Nintendo Switch 2 only. Nintendo has not published an unlock time. Pre-ordering the digital version lets you pre-load it so it is ready at launch.
How much is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
The digital version costs $49.99 in the US, CA$69.99 in Canada, £41.99 in the UK, €49.99 in the eurozone and A$84.95 in Australia, per Nintendo’s eShop prices. The US physical edition is $59.99, and a Switch 2 bundle with the game and 3 months of Nintendo Switch Online is $529.99.
Is Switch Sports Resort on Switch 1?
No. Nintendo sells it as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, and the store pages list Switch 2 as the only system. It relies on Joy-Con 2 features such as mouse controls for Skateboarding, so there is no version for the original Switch.
Can you play Switch Sports Resort in handheld mode?
Nintendo’s US store page lists only TV mode and Tabletop mode as supported play modes. Handheld mode is not listed, which fits a game played by swinging detached Joy-Con 2 controllers.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online for Switch Sports Resort?
Only for online play. The Pro League, where you start at rank E and climb against similarly skilled players, and Casual Online Play both need a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Local play for 1–4 players on one console, Island Crown and the Sightseeing Tours do not.
How big is the Switch Sports Resort download?
Nintendo estimates the file size at 16 GB on Switch 2. That is an estimate published before launch, and final sizes often differ a little.

Handheld mode, controllers and online play

No handheld mode on the store page

This is the detail we expect to catch people out. The “About this item” panel on the US store page lists two supported play modes, TV mode and Tabletop mode, and not handheld. Every sport is played by moving a Joy-Con 2 like a racket, bow or handlebar, so you need the controllers off the console. On a train, propping the Switch 2 on its kickstand is the only way to play.

One controller per player

“Multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player.”

— Nintendo, Nintendo UK game page, read 5 October 2026
A Switch 2 comes with one pair of Joy-Con 2, which is two controllers, so a four-player Bowling night needs a second pair. Nintendo’s page does not say whether original Switch Joy-Con work. Coverage of the September Direct, such as Inven Global’s write-up, reports that they do in every sport except Skateboarding, which needs the Joy-Con 2 mouse sensor. Treat that as reported, not confirmed, until Nintendo’s support pages list it. Either way, Nintendo’s US page also asks you to wear wrist straps and leave room around you.

Pro League and Nintendo Switch Online

Online there are two ways to play. In the Pro League you start at rank E and face players of a similar level, climbing as you win. Casual Online Play does not record wins or losses. Both need a paid membership: Nintendo’s page says “any online play modes require a paid membership to Nintendo Switch Online”, and the game supports Save Data Cloud backups. Nintendo still says details of how many people can play together online “will be provided in the future”. If you are deciding between tiers, our Nintendo Switch Online membership guide compares them. The cheapest Individual plan is all this game needs.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort file size: 16 GB estimated

Nintendo’s store lists an estimated file size of 16 GB. The page data behind it stores exactly 17,179,869,184 bytes, which is 16 × 230, a round placeholder rather than a measured build. When we tracked other Switch 2 games, final sizes came in both above and below Nintendo’s estimates, so leave yourself a few GB of headroom. It is also launching two weeks before Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 (27 GB estimated) and alongside Final Fantasy Resonance. If your 256 GB console is filling up, our Switch 2 storage calculator shows what still fits and which microSD Express card size you would need. A much bigger Switch 2 port lands two weeks later: Stellar Blade Complete Edition needs 25.3 GB on 5 November.

Sources & how we checked this

We read every date, price, size and feature above from Nintendo’s own pages on 5 October 2026. The screenshots are ours. The only non-Nintendo source is the controller-compatibility report, labelled as such.

Regional prices come from Nintendo’s public eShop price service for the game’s US and European title IDs. Stock of the gift cards was checked in the Virtwave store the same day. Read how we research and update posts in our editorial policy.

Digital, physical or the bundle?

Digital — $49.99

9.0/10
Best for: Anyone who already owns a Switch 2

It is $10 cheaper than the cartridge, pre-loads so it is ready at unlock, and a single $50 eShop card pays for it. For a party game that lives on the console permanently, there is little reason to own the box.

Pros
  • $10 less than physical in the US
  • Pre-load before launch
  • Payable with eShop gift cards
Cons
  • Takes about 16 GB of storage
  • Cannot be lent or resold

Physical — $59.99

6.0/10
Best for: Families who share games between consoles or resell them

You can lend it, resell it or take it to a friend’s Switch 2. Shop around, though, as retailers often undercut Nintendo’s own $59.99.

Pros
  • Lend or resell
  • Easy to bring to another console
Cons
  • No pre-load
  • Costs more at Nintendo’s list price

Switch 2 bundle — $529.99

8.0/10
Best for: First-time Switch 2 buyers

If you were buying the console anyway, the bundle saves $27.98 and includes the 3 months of Nintendo Switch Online you need for the Pro League. The game comes as a download.

Pros
  • $27.98 saving, per Nintendo
  • 3 months of NSO included
Cons
  • Only one pair of Joy-Con 2 in the box for a four-player game
