Switch 2 Storage Calculator: how many games fit on 256 GB?
This Switch 2 storage calculator tells you how many games fit on your console. Tick the games you want, add a microSD Express card if you have one, and it adds up the real file sizes from nintendo.com against the space you actually get. The short answer: the 256 GB internal storage holds at most 238.4 of the “GB” shown on a game’s page, before the system takes its share. That is enough for about 7 games of average size from our list, or 3 the size of Cyberpunk 2077.

What we found checking Switch 2 storage
We read every size in this tool from the data behind nintendo.com’s US store pages on 3 October 2026. Each page carries two figures for the Switch 2 version: an estimate published before launch and the final size once the game is out. They can be quite different. Elden Ring Tarnished Edition was estimated at 50 GB and shipped at 41 GB, while Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade grew from an 87.9 GB estimate to 90.4 GB. Ocarina of Time is still an estimate, so we will update it after launch.
The unit trap is the thing nobody explains. When we checked Mario Kart World, its page data said 23,845,666,816 bytes and the page itself said “22.2 GB”. That only works if Nintendo’s GB is 2³⁰ bytes. Storage makers use the other definition: Samsung’s datasheet for its Switch 2 card states 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. So the “256 GB” on the console box and the “22.2 GB” on a game page are not the same GB, and adding them up naively overstates your space by about 7%.
Nintendo says a portion of the 256 GB is reserved for the system and does not say how much. Figures circulate online, but we could not find one on a Nintendo page, so the calculator does not invent one. It shows the 256 GB figure as an upper bound and asks for the free space your own console reports when you want the exact answer.
If you are buying games digitally, a $50 US Nintendo eShop card plus a $10 card covers Ocarina of Time at $59.99 before tax. UK players can use a £25 Nintendo eShop card. How long a game takes to download is a separate question: our game download time calculator answers that one.
How the Switch 2 storage calculator works
Everything in bytes first
Game sizes come from nintendo.com as bytes, and the page prints them divided by 1,073,741,824. Storage you buy is in decimal GB, multiplied by 1,000,000,000. The calculator converts both to bytes, adds them up, and converts back to the GB nintendo.com prints, to one decimal place.
Capacity
Internal storage is 256,000,000,000 bytes (238.4 GB) unless you type the free space your console shows, which already excludes the system reserve and whatever is installed. A microSD Express card adds its size as sold. Card sizes stop at 2 TB, the largest Nintendo supports.
What we assume
We assume the 256 GB internal figure uses the same decimal GB as Samsung’s card datasheet, which is the storage industry’s convention; Nintendo’s spec page does not define it. We count each game’s base size only: updates and DLC add to it, and save data lives in System Memory, which matters because it cannot move to a card.
Switch 2 storage questions, answered
How many games can a Switch 2 hold?
It depends on the games, because Switch 2 sizes range from 6.8 GB (Pokémon Pokopia) to 90.4 GB (Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade) in the 18 we checked on nintendo.com. The 256 GB internal storage holds at most 238.4 GB in the units those pages use, so roughly 10 games the size of Mario Kart World (22.2 GB) or 3 the size of Cyberpunk 2077 (60.6 GB), before the space Nintendo reserves for the system.
How much usable storage does the Switch 2 have?
Nintendo sells the Switch 2 with 256 GB and says a portion is reserved for the system, but it does not publish how much. Storage is sold in decimal gigabytes, while game sizes on nintendo.com are binary, so even an empty 256 GB is only 238.4 of those GB, a 6.9% difference that has nothing to do with the reserve. For the exact figure, read the free space in System Settings > Data Management and type it into the calculator.
Does Switch 2 need a microSD Express card?
Only if you want more space. Nintendo says Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards, up to 2 TB, for games and other data. An ordinary microSD card from a Switch 1 will not save or load digital games on Switch 2; Nintendo says you can only use it to copy Switch screenshots and videos.
How big is Ocarina of Time on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s US store page lists The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 at 27 GB, marked “estimated” because the game is not out until 5 November 2026. That is more than Mario Kart World (22.2 GB). A pre-order downloads the full game ahead of launch, so the space is needed before release day, not on it.
What is the biggest Switch 2 game?
Of the 18 Switch 2 games we checked on nintendo.com on 3 October 2026, the largest is Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade at 90.4 GB, which is more than a third of the internal storage on its own. Third-party ports are the big ones: Split Fiction and Cyberpunk 2077 are both above 60 GB, while most Nintendo-made games are under 30 GB.
Can I put Switch 2 save data on a microSD Express card?
No. Nintendo’s data management FAQ says save data is stored in the console’s System Memory and cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card. Downloaded games, updates, DLC, screenshots and videos can go on the card. Deleting a downloaded game does not delete its save, so you can archive a game to make room and pick up where you left off after downloading it again.
Why does my 256 GB card show less space?
Because the card is measured in decimal gigabytes and the console counts in binary ones. Samsung’s datasheet for its Switch 2 card gives a user capacity of 256,288,751,616 bytes and defines 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Divided by 1,073,741,824 bytes, the size of the “GB” on nintendo.com, that is 238.7 GB. Nothing is missing; it is the same number of bytes in a bigger unit.
What size microSD Express card should I get for Switch 2?
Add up the games you plan to keep installed and subtract the internal space. All 18 games in our list come to 567.9 GB, which fits with a 512 GB card added to the internal storage. Our default four-game library (Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Ocarina of Time, Cyberpunk 2077) leaves 119.7 GB of the internal upper bound free, so plenty of players will not need a card at first.
