Modern Warfare 4 Release Date, Unlock Time, Editions and Preload: Everything Confirmed

The Modern Warfare 4 release date is Friday 23 October 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Anyone who pre-orders a digital edition can play the full campaign a week early, from 16 October. The Standard Edition costs $69.99, the Vault Edition $99.99, and — unlike the last two Call of Duty games — it is not on Game Pass at launch.

Activision announced Modern Warfare 4 on 28 May 2026 and has kept the same date ever since: Friday 23 October 2026, on every platform at once. That includes Nintendo Switch 2, which makes this the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console since Ghosts in 2013. Last-generation machines are out — Activision’s pre-order post states plainly that MW4 will not be available on PS4 or Xbox One.

Modern Warfare 4 unlock time in your time zone

Activision has not yet published a launch-time map. The only exact time we could find on an official storefront is on the US PlayStation Store listing for the Vault Edition, which gives the release as 23 October 2026 at 04:00 UTC — midnight on the US East Coast. If that turns out to be a simultaneous global unlock, this is what it means locally:

Campaign Early Access starts 16 October

Pre-order or pre-purchase either digital edition — Standard or Vault, on any platform — and the entire campaign opens on Friday 16 October (Pacific Time), seven days before launch. It is the full story, not a slice. Multiplayer and DMZ still unlock on the 23rd. A physical disc pre-order does not get Campaign Early Access; the pre-order bonuses in Activision’s edition breakdown are tied to the digital editions. The campaign follows South Korean soldier Park Hyun Jun and Captain Price through a war on the Korean Peninsula, with missions in New York, Paris and Mumbai.

What the Vault Edition adds

• Hostile Alliance Operator Pack — Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix (Price and Valeria come with masked and unmasked skins).
• Special Forces Operator Pack — four national special-forces Operators from the UK (SAS), Germany (KSK), France (COM SFT) and South Korea, each with a voice pack in their own language.
• Signature Weapon Collection — Kastov 762, ISO Nightshade, Rezi 12, Oris 8.6 and a Combat Knife, each with its own Blueprint; the four guns come with an Apex Attachment.
• BlackCell for one season — the premium Battle Pass tier with 20 tier skips and 1,100 COD Points, starting in Season 1. Buy later and you get whichever season is live.
• DMZ Deployment Bonus — Activision has not listed its contents yet.

Is the Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition worth it?

Our read: the Vault Edition is really a season of BlackCell plus a cosmetics bundle for $30 more. If you would buy the premium Battle Pass anyway, it pays for itself. If you mostly want the campaign, the Standard Edition loses you nothing that affects gameplay — and because the upgrade stays available, starting with Standard is the low-risk choice. The one catch: the 10% loyalty discount only applies to a straight Vault pre-order, so a returning player who is already sure should buy Vault up front.

Activision knocks 10% off the Vault Edition pre-order price if you own and have played any of these on the same platform and the same account: Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Modern Warfare II (2022), Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 or Black Ops 7. Playing one through Game Pass counts if the subscription is still active, and so does claiming one as a PS Plus monthly game. The discount shows up at checkout, applies to pre-orders only, ends on 23 October 2026, and does not apply to the $30 upgrade.

Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass?

No. The Xbox Store page says outright that Modern Warfare 4 is not available with Game Pass at launch, and its FAQ tells players to buy the Standard or Vault Edition to play it. Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 both arrived on Game Pass Ultimate on day one; that changed when Microsoft restructured Game Pass in April 2026, and new Call of Duty releases are now expected to join roughly a year after launch. If you are an Ultimate subscriber, cloud play on Xbox is still possible — but only if you own the game.

Modern Warfare 4 PC requirements

Three things stop more PCs than the graphics card does. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot must both be enabled in the motherboard settings — Activision lists them as hard requirements, not recommendations. The processor must support the AVX instruction set. And Intel Arc cards need Resizable BAR turned on. If you played the August beta without changing anything, your machine already passes all three.

Modern Warfare 4 preload date and download size

Activision has not announced the preload date or final download size for the full game yet. What we do know: the beta could be preloaded from 20 August, a few days before it opened, and the beta’s PC build introduced Shader Preloading, which compiles shaders in the background after install to cut stutter. The only official storage figure is 70 GB of SSD space on PC. Recent Call of Duty launches have needed noticeably more once the day-one patch landed, so we would clear well over 100 GB before launch week rather than trust the minimum.

Paying for Modern Warfare 4 with a gift card or wallet balance

Every version of MW4 is bought through a platform store, so wallet balance works everywhere. The rule that catches people is the platform lock: balance on PlayStation cannot buy the Steam version, and a Steam purchase will not give you the Battle.net copy. Buy the code for the store you will actually launch the game from, in your account’s country.

The Microsoft Store pre-order credit

Buy any digital edition from the Microsoft Store (Xbox console or Windows) before 11:59 PM ET on 22 October and Microsoft adds a small promotional Xbox gift card plus Dual 2XP Tokens. It turns up in Offers & credits within 35 days of launch, must be redeemed by 15 December 2026 and spent within 90 days. The amounts differ by country:

• Returning player? Pre-order the Vault Edition directly to keep the 10% loyalty discount; the $30 upgrade path does not get it.
