Key takeaways

  • Activision’s last lifetime figures, from February 2016, are 250 million units and over $15 billion in sales including in-game content; it never updated either before Microsoft bought it.
  • Free-to-play changed the scale: Warzone (March 2020) and Call of Duty: Mobile (October 2019) took Activision from 36 million monthly active users to a record 150 million in 18 months.
  • In July 2023 Call of Duty had around 90 million monthly players, and more than half of all engagement was on mobile.
  • Modern Warfare II (2022) was the fastest premium Call of Duty to $1 billion in sell-through; Microsoft called Black Ops 6 (2024) the biggest Call of Duty release ever.
  • Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 joined Game Pass on day one; Modern Warfare 4 (23 October 2026, $69.99 / $99.99) will not join Game Pass until Holiday 2027.
  • Call of Duty: Mobile passed $3 billion in lifetime player spending by mid-2023, and topped $1 billion in 2021 alone.

How many copies has Call of Duty sold?

Call of Duty had sold more than 250 million units worldwide by February 2016, according to Activision Blizzard’s results release for 2015. That is the last lifetime units figure Activision published: it gave no unit total in any later release or filing, and it stopped filing with the SEC after Microsoft bought it in October 2023. Microsoft has not published a franchise units total either.[26][44]

Which Call of Duty is the best-selling? Activision never published per-game unit totals for the whole series, so there is no official ranking. The closest first-party statements are that Modern Warfare (2019) had the highest first-year premium sales in franchise history, that Modern Warfare II (2022) was the fastest to $1 billion in sell-through, and that Black Ops (2010) became the best-selling game of all time in dollars on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in the US and Europe. What the 250 million does not say: it counts units, so one player who bought every yearly release counts more than a dozen times, and it predates the free-to-play era, when most new players paid nothing for the game.[36][41][19]

How much money has Call of Duty made?

Activision’s last franchise-wide dollar figure is more than $15 billion in total sales, including in-game content, from 2003 to the end of 2015. Each annual report before that restated the running total, so the growth can be charted. After 2015 the best public proxy is the Activision segment of Activision Blizzard, whose “key product franchise” was Call of Duty: it brought in $20.2 billion from 2016 to 2022, peaking at $3.94 billion in 2020.[26][11][12][13][14][15]

What changed: Call of Duty’s money moved from the box to the game. In 2020 Activision’s in-game net bookings rose by $1.4 billion as Warzone players bought battle passes and bundles, and the segment had its best year ever even though only one premium game launched. What the figures do not say: Activision never split revenue by game, and Microsoft folds Activision into “Xbox content and services”. Microsoft named Call of Duty as the driver when Gaming beat expectations in early 2024, but said nothing about it in the Black Ops 7 quarter, when content and services fell 5% on weaker first-party content.[13][46][50]

Every Call of Duty and its launch record

Call of Duty set a new video game launch-sales record four years running, from Modern Warfare 2 ($550 million in five days, November 2009) to Black Ops II ($1 billion in 15 days, November 2012). Later releases were measured mostly in rankings, digital share and engagement, until Modern Warfare II returned to the $1 billion yardstick in 2022; under Microsoft, Black Ops 6 was “the biggest Call of Duty release ever”.[17][22][41][47]

What the records do not say: each “fastest” claim is measured differently (retail dollars in five days, sell-through to $1 billion, hours in 10 days, day-one players), and the industry moved to digital in between, so the records are not a single comparable series. Black Ops 6’s record also counted Game Pass players, who did not buy the game; Microsoft said its unit sales on PlayStation and Steam still rose more than 60%.[20][41][47]

Call of Duty had around 90 million monthly players in mid-2023, Activision said in its last earnings release before the Microsoft deal closed, with more than half of all engagement on mobile. Microsoft has given player counts for single games since then, most recently 50 million people who had played Black Ops 6 by July 2025, but no franchise-wide monthly figure.[43][49]

What the numbers do not say: MAUs are not unique people. Activision counted each game separately and a player on two platforms twice, and the free-to-play era added many players who never paid. Before 2019, a Call of Duty year meant 50–55 million monthly users at the holiday peak; free-to-play more than doubled that, and the record of 150 million came in early 2021, a year after Activision first credited shelter-at-home conditions for rising play. By 2022 the holiday quarter had fallen back to 111 million.[15][38][34][9][12]

Warzone and Call of Duty: Mobile turned a once-a-year purchase into a service. Warzone reached more than 75 million players within five months of its March 2020 launch, and Activision said conversion from Warzone kept selling the paid game at several times the usual mid-year level. Mobile, launched in October 2019, passed 100 million downloads in its first month and $3 billion in lifetime player spending by mid-2023. Neither has a later official player count: Activision’s last Warzone total is from August 2020.[35][39][32][43]

Modern Warfare 4: release date, price and Game Pass

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, developed by Infinity Ward and set during a North Korean invasion of South Korea, launches on Friday 23 October 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It costs $69.99 (Standard) or $99.99 (Vault Edition) in the US. Unlike the two Black Ops games before it, it will not be on Game Pass at launch.[51][55][60][61][53]

  • 14 November 2025: Black Ops 7 launches, again on select Game Pass plans on day one, at $69.99 / $99.99.

  • 26 August 2026: Switch 2 pre-orders and the first Call of Duty open beta on Switch 2.
  • 15 October 2026: Activision confirms Modern Warfare 4 joins Game Pass in Holiday 2027.
  • 16 October 2026: Campaign Early Access opens for digital pre-orders; DMZ Early Access follows on 20 October.
  • 23 October 2026: full launch.

[58][57][52][55][53][54]

Why it matters: Black Ops 6 set Microsoft’s record for Game Pass sign-ups on a launch day, and Microsoft said that game’s Game Pass players turned part of the purchase into subscription revenue recognised over time. Selling Modern Warfare 4 as a standalone game for its first year reverses that. Its $69.99 price is unchanged from Black Ops 7; the US Xbox Store still lists Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III bundles at $69.99.[47][53][57][63]

Call of Duty esports grew from a $1 million championship in 2015 to a $3.5 million World League season in 2016, then to the franchised Call of Duty League with 12 city-based teams in 2020. Activision’s later earnings releases gave no CDL prize pools or view counts, and the league’s own site does not state the 2026 Champs prize pool, so we leave it out.[25][28][33][59]

Methodology and caveats

We read every figure on 21 October 2026 from the document it is linked to: Activision Blizzard’s 10-K filings and earnings press releases (2008–2023) on SEC EDGAR, Microsoft’s 10-K and earnings-call transcripts, the official Call of Duty blog and Call of Duty League site, and the US Xbox Store and PlayStation Store. Nothing was copied from other statistics sites.

Launch-sales figures are Activision’s estimates of retail or sell-through sales, as it described them; we keep its wording (“retail sales”, “sell-through”, “consumer spending”).

“Activision” MAUs and segment net revenues are for Activision Blizzard’s Activision Publishing segment, which includes non-Call of Duty games. Quarterly MAUs are averages of the three monthly counts.

Sums, ratios and cents-per-point values are our own arithmetic on published figures and say so.

Rankings Activision attributes to The NPD Group, GfK or Chart-Track are as quoted by Activision; we did not open those firms’ data, which is not public.

Prices are US list prices before tax, read on 21 October 2026.

  • Activision never reported revenue, bookings or players for Call of Duty alone, and its last lifetime units and dollar totals are from February 2016.
  • Microsoft has owned Activision since 13 October 2023 and reports it inside Xbox content and services; it names Call of Duty only occasionally, so there is no official figure for the franchise after 2023.
  • MAUs count accounts per game and platform, not unique people, and include other Activision games.
  • Launch records use different measures (retail dollars, sell-through, hours, day-one players) and are not one comparable series.
  • Mobile figures are player spending, not Activision revenue.
  • Modern Warfare 4 had not launched when this report was published; its prices, Game Pass date and early-access details can still change.

How we research and correct our content is set out in our editorial policy.

Call of Duty Statistics 2026: FAQ

How many people play Call of Duty?

Call of Duty had around 90 million monthly players across console, PC and mobile in mid-2023, Activision said, with more than half of all play on mobile. The record was 150 million Activision monthly active users in January–March 2021. Microsoft said in July 2025 that 50 million people had played Black Ops 6.

How many copies has Call of Duty sold?

The Call of Duty series had sold more than 250 million units by February 2016, according to Activision Blizzard. It is the last lifetime units figure Activision published; neither Activision nor Microsoft has given a newer total.

What is the best-selling Call of Duty?

Activision never published lifetime sales per game, so there is no official best-seller. Activision said Modern Warfare (2019) had the highest first-year premium sales in franchise history and Modern Warfare II (2022) was the fastest to $1 billion; Microsoft called Black Ops 6 (2024) the biggest Call of Duty release ever.

How much money has Call of Duty made?

Call of Duty had over $15 billion in total sales, including in-game content, from 2003 to the end of 2015, Activision said in February 2016. No later franchise total exists; Activision’s publishing segment, led by Call of Duty, added $20.2 billion in net revenues from 2016 to 2022.

Is Call of Duty on Game Pass?

Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III are on Game Pass Ultimate. Modern Warfare 4 is not: it launches on 23 October 2026 as a standalone purchase and joins Game Pass in Holiday 2027, Activision said on 15 October 2026.

How much does Modern Warfare 4 cost?

Modern Warfare 4 costs $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Vault Edition on the US Xbox Store and PlayStation Store, before tax, as checked on 21 October 2026. Previous Call of Duty owners get 10% off the Vault Edition on digital pre-orders.

How many people play Warzone?

Warzone had more than 75 million players by August 2020, five months after its 10 March 2020 launch, according to Activision. That is the last official Warzone player total; Activision and Microsoft have not published one since.

How much has Call of Duty: Mobile made?

Players spent more than $3 billion on Call of Duty: Mobile between its October 2019 launch and June 2023, Activision said, including more than $1 billion in 2021. These are consumer-spending figures, before app-store fees.
