Xbox gift card → Microsoft account balance

9.1/10
Best for: Gifts, budgets and anyone who does not want a subscription on their debit card

Yes, you can buy Game Pass with a gift card. An Xbox gift card is credited to your Microsoft account as balance, and balance is a valid payment method for any Xbox subscription — Essential, Premium, PC Game Pass or Ultimate. Microsoft itself now routes Rewards points down this path. The one catch is that a recurring subscription usually still wants a backup card on file, even when the balance already covers it.

Pros
  • Works for every Game Pass tier, and for games and DLC as well
  • Balance is spent first, so the subscription draws it down month by month
  • Nothing is tied to a bank card, which is why it works as a gift
  • Non-promotional balance never expires
Cons
  • The checkout may still ask you to add a card or PayPal as a backup
  • Currency is locked to the account’s country — a GBP card needs a UK account

Game Pass membership code

8.3/10
Best for: Buying a fixed block of months with no billing relationship at all

A membership code is a prepaid block — one month, three months, six or twelve — that lands directly on the subscription rather than in the wallet. It is the cleanest way to hand someone a term of Game Pass with no card, no renewal and no balance left over. It is also the only sensible way to buy three months of Ultimate in the UK, because no single gift card in the ladder covers £50.97.

Pros
  • No backup payment method conversation at all
  • Exact terms: 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, priced as a block
  • Ideal for a child’s account you do not want billing attached to
Cons
  • Tier and term are fixed — you cannot part-spend it on a game
  • Ultimate codes are sold in 1- and 3-month blocks, not annual ones

Debit card or PayPal on the account

7.2/10
Best for: Your own long-running subscription that you genuinely want to renew

The default. It renews without you thinking about it, which is the point and also the problem: an Ultimate subscription left running quietly costs £203.88 a year at the September 2026 UK price. Fine for your own account, wrong for a gift, and it is what most people are trying to avoid when they search for whether a gift card will do instead.

Pros
  • Never lapses mid-month
  • Price changes apply automatically, in both directions
Cons
  • Renews silently — the April 2026 price cut was the first good surprise in years
  • Useless as a present
If you already know the amount, the UK Xbox gift cards on Virtwave are delivered by email in minutes and the region is printed on every listing — £10, £20, £35, £50, £70 and £100 among thirteen rungs. The rest of this guide is about which of them is the right one, and what happens after you redeem it.

Can you buy Game Pass with a gift card? What Microsoft account balance actually covers

It can be used to purchase an Xbox-related subscription, but not a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Microsoft Support, Add money to your Microsoft account

That sentence settles the question. Xbox gift card money becomes Microsoft account balance, and Microsoft draws on that balance for Xbox-side subscriptions — every Game Pass tier included. The company also proved the point with its own product: on 1 October 2025 Microsoft Rewards stopped redeeming points directly for Game Pass, and told members to redeem for an Xbox gift card and then pay the subscription from the resulting balance. That is Microsoft documenting the gift-card-to-Game-Pass route in the course of making it the only one it offers.

Why it still asks for a card

Because a subscription is a standing instruction, not a single purchase. Microsoft wants something to bill in month four when the balance runs dry, so the checkout asks for a debit card or PayPal as a backup even when today’s payment is fully covered. It is not a sign the gift card was rejected: the balance is still spent first, and the backup method only ever pays a shortfall. Microsoft’s own wording on balance is blunt about the order — it uses your Microsoft account balance first, then pays the difference with your other payment option.

High-street shops in the UK tend to stock £10, £25 and £50, which is why most guides stop at three numbers. The digital ladder is thirteen rungs deep — £5, £10, £12, £15, £20, £25, £30, £35, £40, £45, £50, £70 and £100 — and the odd-looking ones exist for a reason. £12 and £35 are the two that matter most, because they are the only cards that land cleanly on a month of Premium and two months of Ultimate respectively.

If you are buying for Game Pass

UK Game Pass pricing as of 15 September 2026. Ultimate and PC Game Pass were cut on 21 April 2026, reversing the October 2025 increase.
PlanUK price per monthSmallest card that covers a monthWhat £100 of balance buys
Game Pass Essential£6.99£1014 months (£97.86)
Game Pass Premium£10.99£129 months (£98.91)
PC Game Pass£10.99£129 months (£98.91)
Game Pass Ultimate£16.99£205 months (£84.95) — a full year is £203.88

Ultimate at £16.99 is the number to plan around, because it moved twice inside twelve months: up to £22.99 in October 2025 when Core and Standard were renamed Essential and Premium, then back down to £16.99 on 21 April 2026. Any guide quoting £22.99 was written in between. The practical consequence for card-buying is the three-month gap — £50.97 sits above the £50 card and below the £70 one, so there is no gift card in the UK range that buys a quarter of Ultimate without either overshooting by £19 or leaving you 97p short at the till.

When the term matters more than the flexibility, buy the term directly: the 1-month and 3-month Ultimate membership codes skip the wallet and the backup-card conversation entirely, and the 6-month and 12-month codes still ship under the old Core name for the tier Microsoft now calls Essential. If you are holding several codes and wondering whether they stack, our guide to redeeming, stacking and converting Game Pass codes covers what Microsoft allows and what it quietly stopped allowing. For the next day-one release worth a month of Ultimate, see our Gears of War E-Day release time, preload and editions guide.

If you are buying for games

The Xbox store’s full-price tier for a new release is £69.99, and the calendar has made that number unusually concrete this year: Grand Theft Auto VI is listed on the UK Xbox store at £69.99 with a release date of 19 November 2026. A £70 card clears it with a penny left. Below that, the store’s working price points are roughly £24.99 to £39.99 for mid-tier and back-catalogue releases, which is what the £25 and £40 cards are actually for, and £4.99 to £14.99 for most add-ons and season-pass instalments.

How to pay for Game Pass from gift card balance

  1. Redeem the gift card code
On a console: press the Xbox button, open the Store and choose Redeem code. On a browser, use Microsoft’s redeem page while signed in to the account that will hold the subscription. Xbox and Microsoft gift card codes are 25 characters long.
  2. Confirm the balance landed
Check Payment options in your Microsoft account billing settings. The balance should show in pounds. If it does not appear, the code went to a different Microsoft account — a very common outcome when a household shares a console but not a login.
  3. Open the Game Pass plan you want
Either the Game Pass tab on the console or the Game Pass page on xbox.com. Pick the tier deliberately: Essential, Premium, PC Game Pass or Ultimate are four different monthly prices, and the checkout will not warn you that a cheaper tier would have done.
  4. Choose Microsoft account balance at checkout
Balance is offered as a payment method alongside any saved card. Select it and Microsoft spends the balance first, charging any shortfall to the other method rather than refusing the purchase.
  5. Add the backup method, then switch recurring billing off
If the checkout insists on a card or PayPal, add one to complete the purchase, then turn recurring billing off in Services & subscriptions. The months you paid for still run their course; the card simply never gets charged.
Xbox / Microsoft gift card code XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (25 characters)
Game Pass membership code XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (25 characters)
Both redeem in the same place — the console Store ▸ Redeem code screen, or Microsoft’s redeem page in a browser.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy Xbox Game Pass with a gift card?
Yes. An Xbox or Microsoft gift card is credited to your Microsoft account as balance, and that balance can pay for any Xbox-related subscription, including every Game Pass tier. Microsoft’s own support pages say balance can be used to buy an Xbox-related subscription but not a Microsoft 365 one. Since 1 October 2025, redeeming Microsoft Rewards points for Game Pass works this way too: points buy a gift card, and the gift card pays the subscription.
Why does Xbox ask for a credit card when I already have gift card balance?
Because Game Pass is a recurring subscription and Microsoft wants a payment method it can bill once the balance runs out. The gift card has not failed. Add the backup card to complete the purchase, then turn recurring billing off in Services & subscriptions if you only want the months your balance covers — the subscription still runs to the end of the paid term.
How much is an Xbox gift card in the UK?
Physical cards in UK shops are usually £10, £25 and £50. Digitally the range is wider: £5, £10, £12, £15, £20, £25, £30, £35, £40, £45, £50, £70 and £100. The useful reference points are £20 for one month of Game Pass Ultimate, £35 for two months, and £70 for a £69.99 full-price release.
Can I use a US Xbox gift card on a UK account?
No. Microsoft’s gift card terms state that a denomination in a given currency may only be added to a Microsoft account registered in a jurisdiction that recognises that currency. A dollar card needs a US-registered account; a pound card needs a UK one. Microsoft support cannot convert a card between regions, so the fix is to go back to the retailer, not to change your account country.
Do Xbox gift cards expire?
No. Microsoft’s gift card terms state that non-promotional account balance does not expire. Promotional credit is different and carries whatever expiry the promotion sets, which is the source of most "my Xbox money vanished" stories. A balance you paid for stays put.
How much Game Pass does £50 buy in the UK?
Seven months of Essential at £6.99, four months of Premium at £10.99, or two months of Ultimate with £16.02 left over. It will not buy three months of Ultimate: that costs £50.97, so a £50 card lands 97p short. If you want a quarter of Ultimate, buy the three-month membership code rather than a gift card.

Balance limits, expiry and the region rule

USD 1,000

Two ceilings are worth knowing before you buy a large card. A Microsoft account can hold at most the equivalent of USD 1,000 at any one time, and you can add no more than that in a single day — so a £100 card is nowhere near the limit, but a family pooling several is. The second is the currency rule: Microsoft’s gift card terms allow a denomination to be added only to an account registered where that currency is official, which for sterling means the United Kingdom and nowhere else. It is the same trap that catches UK Nintendo eShop card buyers, and our guide to gift card regions and country locks sets out which brands lock by country and which lock by currency. If your plan is to run several subscriptions off wallet credit rather than a bank card, paying subscriptions from gift card balance covers which services allow it and which still refuse.

The short answer, by situation

  • One month of Ultimate as a gift → the £20 card: £16.99 with £3.01 left in the wallet
  • Two months of Ultimate → the £35 card, the tightest fit in the range at £1.02 spare
  • Three months of Ultimate → not a gift card at all; £50.97 falls in the gap, so buy the 3-month membership code
  • Online multiplayer and nothing else → £30 covers four months of Essential
  • A year of the middle tier → £100 covers nine months of Premium; the last three need a top-up
  • Pre-ordering GTA VI for 19 November → the £70 card clears £69.99 with a penny to spare
  • Buying for someone abroad → match their Microsoft account country, not your own
