How to redeem a Twitch gift card

1. Open twitch.tv/redeem in a browser
   Sign in to the Twitch account that should hold the credit. Pick carefully: a Gift Card Balance attaches to the account that redeems it and cannot be moved to another account afterwards.
2. Enter the claim code exactly as printed
   Type or paste the code from the card or the delivery email, dashes included, and submit. Codes are not case-sensitive, but a space pasted along with the code is the most common cause of an “invalid code” message.
3. Check your Wallet
   The value appears within seconds as Gift Card Balance under the account menu in the top right → Wallet. There is no activation step and nothing to confirm by email.
4. Spend it anywhere on twitch.tv
   At any checkout on the Twitch website — Bits, a subscription, a gift sub, Turbo — the balance is applied first, automatically. If the purchase costs more than you have, the difference goes to your saved payment method.

Where the balance lands, and how to check it

Everything lives in one place: account menu → Wallet → Gift Card Balance, which shows the total you have added but not yet spent. It does not expire, there are no fees attached to it, and it quietly draws down as you buy things. The trade-off for that simplicity is that the money is one-way. You cannot transfer a balance to a friend, split it across accounts, or cash any of it out — once it is on an account, it is Twitch credit for good.

What a Twitch gift card balance can buy

Four things, and they cover almost everything a viewer spends money on: Bits for cheering, channel subscriptions at any tier, gift subs for other people in chat, and a Twitch Turbo membership. What the balance does not do is behave like a general Amazon-style wallet — it is Twitch credit, spendable on Twitch, on the website.

Bits

The first real discount arrives at 1,500 Bits. Below that there is none at all — 100 Bits and 500 Bits both work out at 1.4 cents a Bit — so three 500-bundles cost $21.00 for the same Bits the 1,500 bundle sells for $19.95. Past that the curve flattens slowly: even the 25,000 bundle only takes the price down to about 1.23 cents. Worth knowing before you decide how much credit to load, because a cheer costs you roughly 30% more than the streamer actually receives, whichever bundle you buy.

Subscriptions and gift subs

Those two Tier 1 numbers are not a typo, and the gap has a history. Twitch raised the US Tier 1 sub from $4.99 to $5.99 on 11 July 2024, its first US increase ever, alongside adjustments in more than thirty other countries. Then on 1 October 2024 it raised the price again — but only inside the mobile apps, to $7.99 — explicitly to cover the cut Apple and Google take on in-app purchases. Gift subs are billed at the same tier price as a sub you buy for yourself, so five gifted Tier 1 subs is $29.95 on the web.

Twitch Turbo

Turbo is the site-wide membership: ad-free viewing on most channels, an expanded emote set, a longer VOD storage window and a chat badge. It bills monthly like a sub, and gift card balance covers it on the website. One caveat on the price — Twitch has moved Turbo up from its long-standing $8.99, existing members were held on the old rate for a period before having to opt in to the new one, and third-party pages still quote both figures. Check what your own account page says before budgeting a year of it.

Which amount should you buy?

Why the balance is web-only — and why that saves you money

Read the restriction the right way round and it stops being a restriction. Twitch will not let a gift card balance pay for an in-app purchase — iOS sub tokens, Android subs, or Bits on either platform — but the in-app route is also the expensive one, so the balance only works where you should have been buying anyway. A mobile browser counts as the web: open twitch.tv in Safari or Chrome on the phone, subscribe there, and the emotes, badge and Bits all show up in the app afterwards exactly as if you had bought them inside it.

If the code or the balance will not apply

• A stray space or a swapped character. Codes are not case-sensitive, but whitespace copied along with the code from an email is the usual culprit. Retype it by hand once before assuming the card is faulty.
• You are signed in to the wrong Twitch account. The balance attaches to whichever account redeems it and cannot be moved afterwards, so check the avatar in the top right first — this one is not recoverable.
• You are trying to spend it in the app. Every in-app purchase route ignores gift card balance. Switch to twitch.tv in a browser; a mobile browser is fine.
• Twitch does not read the account as being in the US. Gift Card Balance is a US-resident feature and the check runs at checkout, which is exactly why a code can redeem cleanly and then never appear as a payment option.
• The sub is renewing on an unsupported payment instrument — the renewal rule below.
• The card was issued for a different Twitch market. Currency is effectively the country lock here, the same way it is for every other brand we sell.

The renewal rule nobody mentions

This is the one that generates the most confused support tickets. People redeem a card expecting it to quietly cover their existing monthly sub, then watch their card get charged the following month anyway with the balance still sitting there untouched. The behaviour is deliberate: Twitch only redirects a renewal to your Gift Card Balance when the subscription was originally purchased using a credit card, PayPal or Amazon Pay.
