The Planet Zoo 2 release date is Tuesday 13 October 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the PlayStation Store listing puts the unlock at 14:00 UTC — 7am Pacific, 10am Eastern, 3pm in the UK. There are exactly two editions, $49.99 and $64.99, and the pre-order bonus is in both of them. Physical discs follow a week later, on 20 October.

Planet Zoo 2 release date and unlock time
Every digital storefront agrees on the day and says almost nothing about the hour. When we opened all four listings on 20 September, Steam showed only its own countdown — “this game plans to unlock in approximately 3 weeks” — with no clock time anywhere on the page. Xbox printed a bare 10/13/2026. Frontier’s help centre answers “when will Planet Zoo 2 launch?” with the date and a cheerful exclamation mark and stops there. The PlayStation Store is the one listing carrying a real timestamp, and it reads 14:00 UTC.
What 14:00 UTC means where you live

| London (BST) | 3:00 PM | Tue 13 Oct |

Digital on the 13th, discs on the 20th
This is the detail most release-date pages miss, and it is straight from Frontier’s own FAQ: the physical disc editions are not a launch-day product. They arrive a full week later, on Tuesday 20 October, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at retail. If you have pre-ordered a boxed copy expecting to play alongside everyone else, you have a seven-day gap to plan around — or a reason to switch to a digital pre-order before the 13th.
“Yes! We’re excited to reveal that physical disc editions of Planet Zoo 2 will launch on Tuesday 20 October. You can pre-order on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at all major retailers.”
— Frontier Developments, Planet Zoo 2 help centre, “Will there be a physical edition of Planet Zoo 2?”
There is no preload date for any platform yet. Nothing on Steam, the PlayStation Store or Xbox mentions pre-installation, and Frontier’s FAQ does not cover it. For a 40 GB download that is worth watching: console preloads typically open 48 hours out, and we will update this page the moment one appears.
Planet Zoo 2 editions and price

Frontier lists the same two SRPs everywhere: £39.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 for the Standard Edition, and £54.99 / $64.99 / €64.99 for the Deluxe. We saw those exact figures on Steam, on the PlayStation Store and on Xbox on 20 September, which makes this one of the rare launches with genuine price parity across storefronts. Note the sterling gap is £15 while the dollar and euro gaps are $15 and €15 — the Deluxe is very slightly cheaper in the UK relative to the base game than it is elsewhere.
What there is not: a Collector’s, an Ultimate, a season pass, or a paid early-access window. Several recent simulation launches have sold three-day head starts inside the expensive edition, and this one does not. Both editions unlock at the same moment, which means the only question the Deluxe asks is whether six animals and some signage are worth $15.
The six Deluxe species are still unnamed
Here is the thing we did not expect to find. Every official listing describes the Deluxe Upgrade Pack in exactly the same eleven words — “6 animal species from across the globe, as well as a selection of exclusive animal signs” — and not one of them says which six. We checked Steam, the PlayStation Store’s separate Deluxe Edition listing, the Xbox “compare editions” panel and Frontier’s own pre-order and help pages on 20 September. The species list appears on none of them. Third-party key resellers are circulating a roster, but it is not sourced to Frontier, so we are not repeating it here.
The pre-order bonus is in both editions
The Bonus Content Pack — an exclusive Toucan Eat Shop and signage, three unique animal donation bins, and a Tiger Photo Stand-In Wall — is granted at launch to anyone who pre-orders, on either edition. Xbox makes this unusually legible: its compare-editions panel lists the Bonus Content Pack as an included add-on under both the $49.99 and the $64.99 box. You are not buying up to get it.

Planet Zoo 2 system requirements and download size

Frontier does something most publishers do not: it says what the numbers buy you. The minimum spec is rated for above 30 FPS on Medium settings, the recommended for 30 FPS on High — both on “a well built up zoo”, which is the honest caveat, because a management sim gets heavier as your zoo grows and that cost lands on the CPU rather than the GPU. Frontier spells this out on the help page: if changing graphics settings does not move your frame rate, you are CPU-bound, and on a laptop the fix is cooling, not a lower preset.
Two details in that table deserve more attention than they usually get. The first is that RAM does not move between the tiers — 16 GB is both the floor and the ceiling Frontier tested against, so upgrading memory past 16 GB is not what will help you. The second is the SSD line: it is a recommendation at minimum spec and a hard requirement at recommended spec, which is Frontier saying quietly that a mechanical drive will hurt. There is also a Windows 10 warning on the official page — Microsoft has ended support for it, so Frontier will not guarantee ongoing compatibility even though the game launches supporting it.
Check your own PC in about thirty seconds
Before you pre-order anything, compare your actual hardware against that table. On Windows you do not need a benchmarking tool for this — press Win+R, then run:
dxdiag
The System tab gives you your processor and installed memory; the Display tab gives you the GPU and its dedicated video memory. Compare the VRAM figure in particular, because Frontier’s minimum is stated as an RTX 2060 with 6 GB and the recommended as an RTX 3070 with 8 GB — the VRAM number, not the model name, is what a card with the same name but less memory will fail on. If the answer is “nowhere near”, skip to the cloud option below rather than buying a key you cannot run.
Consoles, Game Pass, Switch and cloud
| Platform | Status at launch | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| PC — Steam | Day one, 13 Oct | Single-player, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing; carries Denuvo Anti-tamper |
| PC — Epic Games Store | Day one, 13 Oct | Listed as a pre-order storefront on Frontier’s own buy page |
| PlayStation 5 | Day one, 13 Oct | PS5 Pro Enhanced; the only listing publishing an unlock time |
| Xbox Series X|S | Day one, 13 Oct | Xbox Play Anywhere, ray tracing, 4K/HDR10, console mouse & keyboard |
| GeForce NOW | Supported | Frontier’s named route for players without the hardware |
| Xbox Game Pass / PS Plus | Not announced | Frontier: “we don’t have anything to share” |
| Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 | Not planned | Explicitly ruled out in the official FAQ |
| PS4 / Xbox One | Not planned | No previous-generation version planned |
| macOS | Not planned | Explicitly ruled out |
The Xbox Play Anywhere tag is the most consequential line in that table and almost nobody mentions it. Buying Planet Zoo 2 through the Microsoft Store gets you the Xbox Series X|S build and the Windows PC build from a single purchase, with saves that follow you between them. If you own both an Xbox and a PC that can run it, that is effectively two copies for $49.99 — and it is the one genuine reason to prefer a storefront over a Steam key.
What Frontier has explicitly ruled out
- Multiplayer. There is none. You can share and download parks and blueprints through the in-game workshop — across platforms — but you cannot build alongside another player.
- Previous-generation consoles. No PS4, no Xbox One, and no plans for either.
- Nintendo. Neither the Switch nor the Switch 2 is planned.
- macOS. No plans for a Mac build.
- Cetaceans. Dolphins, whales and porpoises are deliberately absent, and Frontier explains why: it is following how the conservation community handles re-wilding programmes for those species.
- Always-online. Once downloaded, Planet Zoo 2 plays offline; you only need a connection for the workshop.

If you already own the first Planet Zoo
Frontier has said nothing about Planet Zoo DLC carrying across, and we would not assume it does — the two games are built on different foundations and the sequel introduces entire animal categories the first one never had. What Frontier has confirmed is that the original stays supported by its customer-support team while the development team moves on to the sequel. In practice that means the first game and its packs remain a live, playable library rather than something being retired in October.
If you are filling gaps in that library before the sequel arrives, we stock the Planet Zoo expansions as Steam keys — the Planet Zoo: Aquatic Pack is the obvious one to try if the sequel’s aquariums are what sold you on it, and the Planet Zoo: Conservation Pack is the closest the original gets to the new Wildlife Reserves idea. Thirteen of the animal and scenery packs are on the site, including the South America Pack and the Australia Pack. Frontier’s other simulation games are here too — Planet Coaster 2 and Jurassic World Evolution 3 both run on the same design language, and the latter also has a Deluxe Edition if you want to see what Frontier normally puts in one.
We do not have Planet Zoo 2 itself listed as of 20 September — pre-order keys for Frontier titles typically reach us close to launch rather than months ahead. If you want to be playing at 14:00 UTC on the 13th, pre-purchase on the storefront you intend to play on. If you are buying a key later, our guide to activating a game on Steam with a product key covers the redemption side, and how Steam refunds work is worth reading before any pre-purchase, because the two-hour playtime rule behaves differently on a game you bought before it existed.
Which platform to buy it on
For most people the answer is the machine you already own, because price parity removes the usual reason to shop around. Three things break the tie. If you have an Xbox and a capable PC, buy on the Microsoft Store and take the Play Anywhere copy. If your PC is below the minimum spec, GeForce NOW is Frontier’s own named route rather than a workaround. And if you build with a mouse on a console, both Xbox and Frontier confirm keyboard-and-mouse support — the console version adds a complexity meter that caps how far you can push a build, which is the real difference between platforms, not the input device.
If you fund your purchase with wallet credit rather than a card, our Steam 50 USD wallet code and Xbox 50 USD gift card both cover a Standard Edition pre-order with change left over — just make sure the card’s region matches your store account, which is the single most common reason a code refuses to redeem. Our guide to gift card region locks explains what actually gets checked.
Sources & how we checked this
Every figure on this page was taken from a primary source on 20 September 2026. We opened each storefront listing ourselves rather than aggregating other coverage, set the Steam store region to the United States to read dollar prices, and screenshotted the three claims that matter most — the unlock time, the edition prices and the system requirements. Where Frontier has not published something, such as the six Deluxe species or a preload date, we have said so instead of filling the gap.
- Planet Zoo 2 on Steam — editions, prices, features, Denuvo notice and system requirements.
- Planet Zoo 2 on the PlayStation Store — the 14:00 UTC release stamp, PS5 Pro Enhanced tag and pre-order bonus.
- Planet Zoo 2 on Xbox — the compare-editions panel, Xbox Play Anywhere, ray tracing and console keyboard-and-mouse support.
- Frontier’s official Planet Zoo 2 help centre — the FAQ answers on the physical edition date, Game Pass, Switch, macOS, multiplayer, GeForce NOW, the console complexity meter and offline play, plus the system requirements table.
- Frontier’s Planet Zoo 2 pre-order page — the £/$/€ SRPs for both editions, the four storefronts and the mailing-list Hawksbill Turtle sculpture.
- Frontier’s release-date announcement — the 13 October date and the contents of the Bonus Content Pack and Deluxe Upgrade Pack.
Product availability and prices in our own store were checked on the same date. How we research, correct and update these guides is set out in our editorial policy.
