gamescom is the biggest thing on the gaming calendar that most people watch from their sofa. The show itself fills the Koelnmesse in Cologne with a third of a million visitors, but the part that reaches everyone else is the run of free livestreams bolted onto the front of it — starting with Opening Night Live, which last year pulled more livestream views than most televised sports finals. This year the show runs from 25 to 30 August, every square metre of exhibition space sold out for the first time in the event’s history, and the games on the floor are the ones landing between now and Christmas. Here is the full schedule with real start times, where each stream lives, what is playable in Cologne, and the practical bit nobody mentions: pre-orders open while the trailer is still playing, and a declined card at that moment is how you end up paying full price three weeks later.
The full schedule
gamescom is really two events stacked on top of each other: a developer conference at the start of the week, and the consumer show that everybody actually watches. All times below are CEST, which is Cologne local time (UTC+2). Showcase times are the organisers’ announced slots; publisher broadcasts without a confirmed time are marked as such.

Opening Night Live, in your timezone
Opening Night Live is the two-hour showcase Geoff Keighley runs from Cologne the evening before the doors open. It is the single highest-value ninety minutes of the week: world premieres, release dates for games that have been floating without one, the occasional shadow drop that goes on sale the same night, and a closing announcement the whole show is built to protect. It streams free on the Game Awards’ YouTube and Twitch channels — no ticket, no account, no subscription.

The other showcases worth a calendar entry
Opening Night Live gets the headlines, but three other broadcasts during the week are worth planning around, and one of them is where the genuinely surprising stuff usually turns up.
- Future Games Show at gamescom — Wednesday 26 August, 21:00 CESTNinety-plus minutes of world premieres, developer deep dives and demo drops, hosted this year by Nick Apostolides and Angela Sant’Albano, the actors behind Resident Evil Requiem. It leans harder into gameplay and interviews than ONL does into spectacle, and demos announced here are often playable the same night on Steam.
- gamescom Awesome Indies Show — Thursday 27 August, 18:00 CESTAn hour or so of indie previews, exclusive trailers and gameplay from studios you have mostly not heard of yet. Historically the best value-per-minute stream of the week if you buy games rather than just watch trailers — this is where the €15 game that eats your autumn comes from.
- Xbox at gamescom — Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 AugustMicrosoft is running two broadcasts on consecutive days alongside the largest publisher footprint on the floor. 2026 is the 25th anniversary of the original Xbox, which is not the sort of round number a platform holder lets pass quietly. Start times had not been confirmed at the time of writing — check the Xbox channels on the day.
- gamescom dev awards — Monday 24 AugustThe industry-facing end of the week, celebrating work from the gamescom dev indie expo across four categories. Not aimed at players, but the winners tend to appear on wishlists a few months before everyone else finds them.
Who is actually in Cologne
The 2026 exhibitor list is the reason this year is being described as the biggest gamescom ever: every available hall and outdoor area was booked out, a first for the event. Nintendo confirmed its booth in May, Xbox followed in June, and the list filled from there.
- Platform holders and storefronts — Nintendo, Xbox (Microsoft) and Google, with Xbox running the single largest publisher presence at the show.
- Western publishers — Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, CD Projekt Red, Focus Entertainment, Team17, Plaion and Embark Studios.
- Japanese publishers — Capcom, Bandai Namco, SEGA and Konami.
- Asia-Pacific heavyweights — Tencent and Level Infinite, HoYoverse, Krafton and Bilibili.
- Outside the traditional games industry — LEGO, Sony Pictures and TikTok, which tells you roughly where the marketing money is pointing this year.
What is playable on the floor
Playable builds are the honest signal at gamescom. A game with 140 demo stations behind it is shipping; a game with a cinematic trailer and no hands-on is a year out at least. Here is a sample of what has been confirmed as playable or present, and when those games actually arrive.
| Game | Publisher | Status at the show | Release |
|---|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 | Xbox / Activision | Playable at the Xbox booth | 23 October 2026 |
| Gears of War: E-Day | Xbox | Playable at the Xbox booth | 6 October 2026 |
| Fable | Xbox | At the Xbox booth | TBC |
| Onimusha: Way of the Sword | Capcom | Playable, ~4 weeks pre-launch | 25 September 2026 |
| Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen | Capcom | World-first playable | 9 October 2026 |
| Mega Man: Dual Override | Capcom | World-first playable | TBC |
| The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past | CD Projekt Red | Confirmed presence | TBC |
What to expect — and what not to
Every year the rumour mill promises gamescom will deliver the one announcement it has been promising since June, and every year the show delivers something else instead. It helps to separate what the format reliably produces from what people merely hope for.
The safest way to enjoy the week is to treat every showcase as a calendar-filling exercise rather than a lottery. By Sunday you will have a clearer picture of what is landing between October and next spring than any pre-show rumour thread could give you — and that is genuinely useful, because it is what you will be budgeting for.
How to watch from home, for free
- Pick your streamOpening Night Live goes out on the Game Awards’ official YouTube and Twitch channels. The Future Games Show and the Awesome Indies Show stream on their own YouTube and Twitch channels. All of them are free and none require an account to watch.
- Set a reminder, not an alarmOn YouTube, hit “Notify me” on the premiere page for each show. That handles the timezone maths for you and survives a schedule slip, which a phone alarm set to a converted time does not.
- Watch the pre-showFor ONL, join about 30 minutes early. Announcements made there are frequently not repeated in the main broadcast.
- Have your wishlist open in a second tabWishlisting during the stream is how you find out about the launch discount later. On Steam it also feeds your discovery queue, which is how the smaller announcements resurface when they actually release.
- Catch up on the VODIf the time does not work — 04:00 in Sydney is a big ask — every one of these shows is up as a VOD within minutes of ending, and the announcements are in trailers you can watch individually afterwards.
The bit that costs money: pre-orders
The commercial reality of showcase season is that a lot of trailers end with a store page going live the same minute, often with a limited-time bonus attached. That is the moment payment friction actually costs you something: a card that needs a 3-D Secure app you do not have to hand, a store that will not take your local card, or a payment method attached to an account in the wrong region. A pre-loaded wallet balance sidesteps all three, because at checkout it is simply a balance the store already holds.
- Work out which wallet you need before TuesdayPC announcements almost always mean Steam. Xbox’s two broadcasts mean an Xbox gift card, and PlayStation-bound multiplatform releases mean a PlayStation Store card. If you play across platforms, the cheapest approach is to wait for the show and top up the one that actually gets the announcement.
- Match the region before you buy the codeThis is the single most common mistake. A gift card is locked to the store region it was issued for, and a US code will not redeem on an account set to Germany or the UAE. Check your account’s country setting first, then buy the matching card.
- Redeem it to your balance in advanceRedeeming takes under a minute and the balance does not expire on the major platforms. Doing it before the show means the pre-order is one click rather than a payment flow.
- Wishlist rather than pre-order on impulsePre-order bonuses on cross-platform games are rarely worth locking money up for months. Wishlisting costs nothing, alerts you at launch and at every subsequent discount, and leaves the balance available for the game you actually end up wanting.
Your gamescom week checklist
- Convert 20:00 CEST on Tuesday 25 August into your local time — or just hit “Notify me” on the YouTube premiere
- Set aside the pre-show as well as the main broadcast for Opening Night Live
- Add the Future Games Show (Wed 21:00 CEST) and the Awesome Indies Show (Thu 18:00 CEST) to your calendar
- Check the Xbox channels on Wednesday and Thursday for the two broadcast times
- Confirm your Steam / PlayStation / Xbox account region before buying any gift card
- Top up the wallet you are most likely to use, so a pre-order is one click and not a payment argument
- Keep a wishlist tab open while you watch and add rather than buy on impulse
- Ignore every “free code” giveaway that appears in a stream chat during the show
- If you are attending in person, double-check whether your ticket covers the day you planned
