What each INR amount actually clears
India is consistently one of the cheapest Steam regions in the world, and that is the whole reason these amounts stretch further than the dollar figures suggest. Elden Ring on the Indian store works out around $38 at the going exchange rate, against roughly $86 in Switzerland — the same game, the same store, a gap of well over 100%. So a ₹2,500 code is not a modest top-up on the Indian store. It is a full-price headline game.
The stranded-balance trap (and why it barely matters)
The classic complaint about wallet codes is stranded change: you buy ₹2,500 for a ₹2,999 game and end up ₹499 short. On Steam that is a non-event. Select Steam Wallet at checkout, Steam applies everything in the wallet, and it then prompts for a second payment method to cover the ₹499 difference. You can also stack codes — redeem two or three in a row and the balances simply add up.

An INR code only works on an India-region Steam account
This is the single reason a perfectly good code appears not to work. Steam wallet codes are currency-locked by design: Valve will not convert one wallet currency into another on your behalf, so a rupee code has to meet a wallet already denominated in rupees. The check reads your Steam account’s store country — not your IP address, not the city you last logged in from, and not where the code was bought.

Checking your store country in 30 seconds
- Open your account detailsIn the Steam client or on steampowered.com, click your account name at the top right and choose Account details.
- Read the country lineUnder Store & Purchase History you will see your country. If it says India and prices across the store show in ₹, an INR code will redeem.
- Check the wallet, not just the flagIf you already have a balance, it is displayed in your wallet currency. A balance shown in $ or € means the account is not on INR, whatever the country field says.
Why switching region is not a workaround
People occasionally buy the wrong currency and assume they can just flip the account over. Steam lets you change store country only once every three months, and only with a payment method registered in the new country — which is exactly the thing a wallet-code buyer is usually trying to avoid. Changing region also converts any existing balance into the new currency at the rate of the day. Buy the currency your account is already on; it is far less work than moving the account to the code.

UPI is on Steam now — so when is a code still the better buy?
It is worth being straight about this. Since July 2025 Steam has accepted UPI directly in India, handled through the Komoju gateway, so Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and bank UPI all appear at checkout. That removed the oldest reason Indian players bought wallet codes — the international card gateway that used to reject a large share of Indian debit cards at the 3-D Secure step. If you have UPI and you are buying for yourself, paying Steam directly is perfectly reasonable. A wallet code still wins in five situations:
- You are gifting. A code is a product you can hand over; your UPI ID is not.
- You are capping spend. Credit in a wallet cannot quietly become a second purchase the way a saved payment method can.
- The player has no bank account — the common case for younger players.
- You want the money on the account before a sale starts, so checkout is one click when the sale drops.
- Your payment keeps failing anyway. Gateways still decline, and the shop’s checkout is a different rail entirely.
