Whether to play Zero Dawn first, what the Complete Edition adds, and when Burning Shores opens

The publisher’s description further down sets up Aloy’s journey west. This covers what it leaves out: how much the story leans on the first game, exactly what “Complete Edition” includes on PC, what the Nixxes port does, when the Burning Shores expansion becomes playable, and when the game tends to be discounted.

Do you need to play Horizon Zero Dawn first?

Not strictly, but the story is better if you do. Forbidden West is set six months after Horizon Zero Dawn and is built on its revelations — who Aloy is, what happened to the old world, why the machines exist. You can follow Forbidden West without that background, but the weight of its best moments comes from having uncovered those answers yourself.

If the story matters to you, play Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered first; it includes The Frozen Wilds expansion. If what draws you is the world, the climbing and the machine hunts, Forbidden West is the more refined game of the two and is perfectly enjoyable on its own.

What the Complete Edition includes

Main game
Horizon Forbidden West
Expansion
Burning Shores, after the main quest
Outfits
Carja Behemoth Elite and Nora Thunder Elite
Weapons
Carja Behemoth Short Bow and Nora Thunder Sling
Extras
Resources pack, Apex Clawstrider Machine Strike piece
PSN link bonus
Nora Legacy Outfit and Nora Spear

What the PC version does

The port is by Nixxes Software, working with Guerrilla, and it arrived on 21 March 2024. Frame rates are unlocked; NVIDIA DLSS 3 upscaling and frame generation, DLAA and Reflex are supported, alongside AMD FSR and Intel XeSS; and the game runs in ultrawide 21:9, super-ultrawide 32:9 and 48:9 across three monitors.

Mouse and keyboard controls are fully customisable, Steam Input is supported for remapping, and a wired DualSense adds haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. A PlayStation Network account is optional; linking one unlocks the Nora Legacy Outfit and Nora Spear, and nothing else depends on it. Plan for 150 GB of SSD space.

When to play Burning Shores

Burning Shores continues Aloy’s story after the ending of Forbidden West, and it opens only once you have completed the main quest. There is no choice to make about timing: finish the campaign, and the expansion becomes available in the same save, with your level, skills and gear intact.

It takes Aloy to a volcanic archipelago built over the ruins of Los Angeles, with new machines, a new companion and a raised level cap. It is best played soon after the ending, while the threads the main story leaves open are still fresh.

The Horizon games, in order

Two main games, two expansions, and one LEGO retelling off to the side.

  1. 2017 · PC 2020

    Horizon Zero Dawn

Aloy’s origin, and the answer to what happened to the world. On PC today as Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered (2024), which includes The Frozen Wilds expansion.

  2. 2022 · PC 2024

    Horizon Forbidden West

Six months later, heading west into lands the first game only hinted at.

  3. 2023 · PC 2024

    Burning Shores

The expansion that follows the main story. Included in the Complete Edition.

  4. 2024

    LEGO Horizon Adventures

A light-hearted, family-friendly take on the first game’s story in LEGO bricks, with co-op. Separate from the main storyline.

When Horizon Forbidden West goes on sale

The Complete Edition has been on PC since 2024, and games at that stage are discounted more often and more deeply than Sony’s newest releases. The waves follow the same shape every year.

We never publish a sale before it starts: dates reach us through our distribution channel under embargo and are the publisher’s to announce. The moment a PlayStation sale goes live, the PlayStation page shows a countdown and the deepest discount in it.

March

Spring sale

Often the first reasonable cut of the year on the PlayStation back catalogue — and the month the Complete Edition reached PC.

Late June into July

Summer sale

One of the two big windows of the year, and usually a deep one for titles of this age.

Late November

Black Friday and Cyber Monday

The most dependable discount of the year across the whole catalogue.

Late December into early January

Winter sale

The other big window. Worth comparing with Black Friday rather than assuming either is lower.

Irregular

Series and publisher sales

Publisher promotions often discount a series together — the moment to pick up Zero Dawn alongside this one.

Horizon Forbidden West on PC: questions before buying

Do I need to play Horizon Zero Dawn first?

It is not required, but the story is built on the first game’s revelations and lands much harder if you have played it. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, with The Frozen Wilds, is the version to get.

Is Burning Shores included?

Yes. The Complete Edition includes the Burning Shores expansion, along with two outfits, two weapons, a resources pack and an Apex Clawstrider Machine Strike piece.

When can I play Burning Shores?

After you complete the main quest. It continues the story from the ending and becomes available in the same save.

Do I need a PlayStation Network account?

No. It is optional. Linking an account unlocks the Nora Legacy Outfit and Nora Spear; the full game, the expansion and every other bonus item play without it.

Is there multiplayer?

No. Horizon Forbidden West is a single-player game. For co-op in the Horizon world, LEGO Horizon Adventures supports two players.

How long does it take to finish?

Around 30 hours for the main story, and closer to 60 if you take on the side quests, hunting grounds and ruins. Burning Shores adds several more hours on top.

Does it support ultrawide and high frame rates?

Yes. Frame rates are unlocked, and 21:9, 32:9 and 48:9 triple-monitor setups are supported, with DLSS 3 frame generation available on supported NVIDIA cards.

Can I use a controller?

Yes. The DualSense is fully supported, with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers over a wired connection, and other controllers work through Steam Input. Mouse and keyboard controls are fully customisable.

Will it run on my PC?

The publisher’s own specifications are further down this page — the Requirements link in the section bar jumps straight to them. The minimum lists a GTX 1650 4 GB or RX 5500 XT 4 GB with 16 GB of RAM; the recommended tier an RTX 3060 or RX 5700. Either way, the game needs 150 GB of SSD space.

How quickly do I get the key, and is it official?

Immediately after payment, on screen and by email. Every key comes through our authorised distribution channel and activates permanently on your own Steam account.
