Whether you need the first game, what you actually do in this one, and how it runs on PC

The publisher’s description further down lays out the premise: Sam Porter Bridges, eleven months on, connecting Australia to the Chiral Network. This covers what a buyer still wants answered — whether you can start here, what a Death Stranding game is like to play hour to hour, what the PC version and the March 2026 update added, and what needs a PlayStation Network account.

Do you need to play the first Death Stranding?

No, but know what you are skipping. DEATH STRANDING 2 is a direct sequel set eleven months after the first game, and it picks up Sam’s relationships, losses and vocabulary — BTs, Timefall, chiral, the Bridges organisation — without stopping to re-explain them. To bridge the gap, the main menu has an official recap of the first game’s story, about six minutes long, which covers the broad strokes without drowning you in detail.

If you have the time, the first game is on PC as DEATH STRANDING Director’s Cut, and it makes the sequel’s best moments land harder. If you do not, watch the recap and start here: the sequel is widely seen as the easier way in, with more ways to deal with trouble than the first game gave you.

What you actually do

You deliver cargo across a hostile open world, and the journey is the game. Every trip is planned: what to carry, how much weight you can balance, which route avoids the river, the storm or the enemy outpost. Terrain, weather and time of day change as you go — earthquakes, sandstorms, forest fires, and Timefall, a rain that ages whatever it touches — and the roads and bridges you build to make the next trip easier are what turn a wilderness into a network.

Trouble can be met head-on with fabricated weapons, avoided with stealth and long-range gear, or simply routed around. Other players never appear in your game, but their work does: through the Social Strand System, a ladder, a bridge or a shared locker another porter left behind can turn up exactly where you need it, and yours can do the same for them. It is slow, deliberate and unlike anything else — people who love it tend to love it for precisely the pace others bounce off.

What arrived with the PC release

The PC version launched on 19 March 2026, alongside a free update for every owner. It added To the Wilder, a much harder way to play in which orders take every trick you have; Trapped in a Strange Realm, a VR training area for replaying Sam’s confrontations with Neil that unlocks new bandanas; and visits from the Chiral Feline in the private room aboard the DHV Magellan, with the cat added to Photo Mode.

On PC the controls are fully rebindable for mouse and keyboard, a wired DualSense adds haptic feedback and adaptive triggers that push back as your cargo shifts, and 3D audio is supported through Dolby Access, DTS Sound Unbound or Windows Sonic. The game requires an SSD.

Before you buy: PSN and editions

A PlayStation Network account is optional. Signing in adds the PlayStation overlay, trophies and your friends list, and linking the account unlocks two cosmetics — the Porter Suit: Link and the Patch: Link for your backpack. Nothing in the story or the online Social Strand System depends on it.

This page sells the standard edition, which is the complete game. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds an early unlock of the Machine Gun (MP) at level 1, three backpack patches and gold versions of the Battle, Boost and Bokka skeletons — useful in the first hours, cosmetic after that. No story, region or mode is held back from the standard edition.

When DEATH STRANDING 2 goes on sale

DEATH STRANDING 2 is the newest PC release among these PlayStation titles, and new releases are discounted rarely and lightly in their first year. The waves still come at the same points in the year; how far the price moves grows as the game gets older.

We never publish a sale before it starts: dates reach us through our distribution channel under embargo and are the publisher’s to announce. The moment a PlayStation sale goes live, the PlayStation page shows a countdown and the deepest discount in it.

March

PC launch anniversary

The game reached PC on 19 March 2026, so its anniversary falls in the same month as the spring sale.

Late June into July

Summer sale

One of the two big windows of the year. For a first-year release, expect a modest cut rather than a deep one.

Late November

Black Friday and Cyber Monday

The most dependable discount of the year, and usually the first real one on a new release.

Late December into early January

Winter sale

The other big window. Worth comparing with Black Friday rather than assuming either is lower.

Irregular

Publisher sales

PlayStation promotions discount a group of titles together; newer games join them less often, but they do join.

DEATH STRANDING 2 on PC: questions before buying

Do I need to play the first Death Stranding before this one?

It is not required. The sequel continues the first game’s story, but the main menu includes an official six-minute recap. Playing DEATH STRANDING Director’s Cut first gives the story more weight if you have the time.

Do I need a PlayStation Network account?

No. It is optional on PC. Signing in adds trophies, the PlayStation overlay and friends, and linking unlocks the Porter Suit: Link and the Patch: Link.

Is there multiplayer?

Not in the usual sense. You never meet other players, but through the Social Strand System the structures, signs and supplies they leave appear in your world while you are online, and yours in theirs.

Is it more of an action game than the first?

It gives you more options: fabricated weapons, new enemy types and bosses, and skills that improve through APAS enhancements. But deliveries and route-planning are still the heart of it, and stealth or avoidance remain valid answers to most fights.

What is To the Wilder?

A high-difficulty way to play added in the free March 2026 update, with harsher environments and deadlier enemies. It is for players who have mastered the standard game, and every owner has it.

Does it run on Steam Deck?

Yes. DEATH STRANDING 2 has been Steam Deck Verified since patch 1.3, which also improved performance and fixed several crashes.

What does the Digital Deluxe Edition add?

An early unlock of the Machine Gun (MP) at level 1, three backpack patches (Quokka, Chiral Cat and Why Me?) and gold Battle, Boost and Bokka skeletons at levels 1 to 3. The game itself is identical.

Which languages does it support?

Voice acting in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese and both Spanish variants, with subtitles and menus in several more, including Arabic, Korean and Traditional Chinese.

Will it run on my PC?

The publisher’s own specifications are further down this page — the Requirements link in the section bar jumps straight to them. The minimum lists a GTX 1660 or RX 5500 XT 8 GB with 16 GB of RAM; the recommended tier an RTX 3070 or RX 6800. The game needs 150 GB, and an SSD is required.

How quickly do I get the key, and is it official?

Immediately after payment, on screen and by email. Every key comes through our authorised distribution channel and activates permanently on your own Steam account.

About this game

From legendary game creator Hideo Kojima comes an emotionally charged evolution of this genre-defying experience. In bringing this title to PC, KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS worked with Nixxes Software to deliver the definitive version of the critically acclaimed console release.

Unique and realistic world

In the expansive open world of DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH, countless areas with vastly different terrains and environments are seamlessly connected, and the changing time, weather and nature itself provide a variety of landscapes and challenges.

Evolved and more flexible action

There are various obstacles that will prevent Sam from completing his mission. Face them head-on, sneak around, or completely avoid dangerous areas. Choose your approach to any situation.

A deep and captivating story

Eleven months after the events of the original DEATH STRANDING, rejoin Sam and his companions on a new journey to save humanity from extinction and discover the answer to this haunting question: Should we have connected?

Go beyond the UCA

Join Sam for the next chapter of his journey as he attempts to connect Australia to the Chiral Network. Navigate a living environment through day and night cycles, natural disasters – including earthquakes, sandstorms and forest fires – and Timefall, a rain that instantly ages everything it touches.

To traverse this dangerous landscape, you’ll need to build new types of infrastructure, master specialized equipment and confront (or evade) the otherworldly creatures that roam the fractured world.

Fight for the future

Face enigmatic Mech soldiers, as-yet unseen BTs and new boss types that will push Sam to his limits. As you prepare for each journey, you’ll be able to fabricate weapons like machine guns, shotguns and grenade launchers to deal with threats. Or, choose to avoid confrontation altogether with stealth – using decoy holograms, silent takedowns and long-ranged gear.

Through APAS enhancements, Sam can learn new skills that will improve his odds of survival, like enhanced weapon fire-rates or reduced movement noise to help him stay hidden.

Hands across Australia

The iconic Social Strand System of DEATH STRANDING returns to encourage asynchronous connection across the globe. Your in-game actions affect how other players interact with the world and vice-versa – so connect, collaborate and help your fellow Porters on their journeys.

Leave a “Like” on a useful bridge, donate resources to community projects, store field ware in shared lockers and finish incomplete deliveries as you stumble upon dropped cargo from other Porters. As you support other players on their journeys, your own reputation will grow, giving you access to valuable resources and new gear.
